How to blind your pet or yourself for less than $20

I always knew these things were dangerous.
Like the 100,000 lumen lights. They just lie in the opposite direction.
Only 20x (or lots more) over the legal limit to sell in the USA.
Instead we have “Cat Toys” putting out enough wattage to instantly blind…
All the Best,
Jeff

and, yes…
we have the blue one.

it does the balloon “thing”
from ~8 feet away.

however, we wear better safety glasses.
here is another video:

Lasers have always fascinated me and I have a couple cheapo button battery ones, but the more powerful lasers scare the heck out of me which thankfully prevents me from buying any!

Yeah, I just got a 7 watt blue with some OD 6 safety glasses. I can burn dark metal and light stuff on fire with it. The beam on my 1.2 watt green looks way cooler though

For anyone looking to get into the hobby… I even wear the glasses when I’m changing the batteries. One unlucky reflection and you’re permanently blind

Oooh, where ya get the 7W blue?

Biggest I got is 1.5W.

From the scant research I was able to find, and I searched for a while, it appears an accidental hit is more like “now you have a black spot in your vision that, while it got better with time, is ultimately permenant”, not necessarily “one flicker and you are totally blind.”

Curious if anyone else was able to search to a different result. Also seems with 1w green or 5w blues readily available you’d see more local news stories “teen kid blind as a bat from $59 Amazon purchase”

Ya you’re right dude I exaggerated a bit. I just hate to see someone who never had a laser just zap it around. I can tell you that even unintentionally briefly passing your hand in front of a 1 watt beam is extremely unpleasant. Feels like it’s burning from the inside of your hand!

Here’s the one I just got. I don’t like the multi mode operation much. Not sure why I chose that option. I have a copper green there just click on and off

Low/mid/strobe/high/SOS?!? :person_facepalming:

Yes, let me use my laser in SOS mode to call for help from the USS Star Track.

What are they thinking??

Yeah I don’t know why I thought it would be cool. It’s very unwieldy to do the half button presses to switch between modes.

This is easy access to high powered lasers is really worrisome. Seriously. Some nut job could use one of these on an unsuspecting crowd and cause a lot of permanent damage to those targeted, because the natural instinct for someone being startled is to look in the direction of the cause.

The guy in that video seems super knowledgeable, but he’s really sloppy. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day while he’s futzing around with a laser project, forgetting to put on protective eyewear or mistakenly grabbing for the wrong one that doesn’t provide enough protection… and souring his vision permanently. Or perhaps, carelessly igniting his house on fire.

What some don’t realize is the reflection from the higher power lasers, particularly green and blue, can also be very dangerous and blind you temporarily or permanently damage your eyes. Shining it off a light matte surface can produce dangerous reflections. If you want to experiment with these lasers, invest in properly rated safety glasses (never the included ones!) for the wavelength of laser you’re using since glasses are designed for specific wavelengths. They’re expensive, but ever tried to replace your eyesight? Priceless.

Ya man I agree one million percent. I even wear glasses when I put the batteries in. And you need to get the right glasses for the color laser you’re rocking.

I love that channel, missed this video so thank you for sharing it!

I hate pets and I hate other people’s pets, so I think I’ll buy one of those mega-green units. I almost ordered one from Fasttech when I saw they were closing and it was one of the few things still available for in-stock sales…maybe glad I didn’t since it was just a few days until the site went totally dark. I’ll take my chances with Amazon…the ones with the key lock at the tailcap seem to be dependably powerful and decent enough. I saw a couple of those some years back and wow. Fantastic for helping people to learn constellations, pointing out planets or individual stars.

As for imports and laws, they really do need to get on top of that. Sneaking through a Lumintop Bunny is one thing but these are legit dangerous and worthy of the regulation, imo.

I have the same one in the video, the silver one, in green I bought a couple years ago. For 20 dollars I was not expecting much, just wanted a toy. A toy it is not! The beam is so intense it looks like its hitting the clouds above. Even when the beam is adjusted to what looks like a half inch wide it still rockets out into the sky. The laser glasses I bought cost more then the laser.

That guy is a freak.
Fun videos though.
He wonders if he gives off mixed messages. lol
He should build a LEP.

Oh ya I think the LEPs have blue lasers that are only in the couple watt range.

That was intense with VR goggles i think my eyes got damaged just from watching his video

and i could smell the morning wood when he made the desk smoke

I bought a Uni-T UT385 laser power meter (up to 40mW) to make sure all my laser devices are within spec. People with multi-watt lasers are irresponsible, my LaserPecker 2 laser engraver makes do with just 2W.

Yes, so i wonder what he could do with the concept, besides burning the phosphors…
