my search for a compact and simple flood

I’ve been looking for a flood to complement my two throwers.

I want a tail switch that does momentary on - I love this feature on my two existing lights and use it all the time.

No charge port

21700 battery.

I was looking at the convoy s21b with cree xhp50.2, but the switch is reverse clicky (no momentary on). Now I’ve come across the convoy s21a with cree xhp50.2. It looks the same but with a normal clicky switch. I believe it does momentary on. No charge port. It doesn’t have the simple ui option like the s21b, which looked like a good option for me. I’d probably choose the 5th group - 1, 20, 100, and rarely use the 100 because I imagine it would get hot quickly. This looks to be my current choice - are there other options like this out there?

I thought it would be good to post this question, it’s a combination of features that others here might appreciate too.

Get the light you want that ticks all the boxes except floodiness, and slap on some diffusion film.

Instant flooder.

I don’t want too much flood. Maybe flood is the wrong term. 100m or so on med for example - the xhp50.2 looks good. Something to balance out the throwers I have; maybe use it on the bike too.

2nd find that looks like it fits the criteria is the convoy s16 with xhp50.2. It is a bit bigger but has some cooling fins. No external port, tail button with momentary (I think).

Wurkkos TS21 comes to mind.

I know they are well regarded. I really want the momentary on feature and no charging port. I also prefer just the one led - the xhp50.2 seems to be a reasonable beam in these smaller lights with op reflector.

Must be no charging port at all? Or you could just put duct tape on top of its rubber cover?

Sofirn SP35T has forward clicky tail switch, but there’s charging port with rubber cover, if you eventually make do with duct tape solution.
The SFN43 LED is quite floody, however, it generates lots of heat…

Btw, what are your two thrower lights?

The other two lights I have are sofirn c8l and c8g.

c8g is actually my favorite even though it has the less bright sst40. It throws further, has no charging port and runs much cooler. I do like the c8l but see the charging port as it’s weakness. The C8L is a nice compromise as far as bigger spot goes. I will keep it and use it because it is such a well regarded light by others, and I just avoid turbo and high. If I had a choice again I’d probably look at the amutorch xt45 with sft40 instead of c8l.

The dual switch setup of the sofirn lights are awesome. I was lucky there considering these were my first purchase. I was keen to see the sp35t but there have been a couple of problems with that. The few reviews I’ve seen / read mention heat and poor temperature regulation. The port alone is enough for me to dismiss this.

I can see how well just a tail switch can work too now. For example, using a soft press to cycle through modes - amutorch xt45.

Did you know you can now get the sp35t with xhp50?

I also thought this might be a good opportunity to list lights with these few criteria for others here. For example not everyone appreciates a charge port.

Ask Simon for a forward switch

Gee, I just looked at this. I don’t really like multiple leds, but the beam on this is impressive. I never thought about getting a switch changed either.

I don’t know what are the other consequences of this though. Could it just mean no mode changing while the light is on - that any mode change has to happen while the light is off? If so, that sounds OK to me. That must be the advantage of a 2 switch setup. Knowing this I’d probably choose (at this point) the s21b with single emitter and ask for that switch to be changed.

It doesn't have momentary on, but I like the Acebeam E70-AL.

It has an XHP70 emitter, which is my favorite floody emitter.

That emitter outputs a massive amount of light, though now I prefer throwy emitters.

If that light isn't ideal for you, maybe look for another flashlight with the XHP70.

I didn’t know that, the SP35T with XHP50.2. It should have better thermal performance now.
Thanks for sharing, and I like Sofirn C8L too.

I did ask simon for a forward switch on s21b - he said he doesn’t have a forward clicky switch to suit. Great idea though; thankyou.

I’m still looking; luckily in no hurry. There are many lights that look good, but blow it with proprietary battery (21700 with charging port) or inbuilt charging or no momentary.

yes

that!

flood is simple

if you don;t want it ‘too floody’ - make a ring of frosty tape - leave some taped in the middle

if you convert a ‘thrower’ though, you will end up with a head that is unnecessarily big

because throwing required big reflectors usually, floody can be done with very small heads

CYANSKY P25 V2 3600 Lumens Tactical Flashlight,USB-C Rechargeable LED Floodlight,Micro-arc Oxidation

these are floody, use 21700, reasonably small, have rear mounted momentary on (plus a side switch for modes)

very well made, over $100

i have one and it is the one i reach for when i want floody

it makes a LOT of light in a big pattern

light tint is fairly cold though, i do not mind that
