I need a remote controlled light switch.

Why is this such a hard thing to find?
Replace switch in wall. Battery powered remote thingy in my hand.
Push the button it turns on. Push the button it turns off.
Also controlled by switch in the wall.
Don’t need no stinking WiFi, Router, Web, Apple, Alexa, or any other of that crap.

30 years ago, I could get an X10 to do the job (and get X10 add every 15 minutes until they went into the dark).
Now everything wants to be SMART- I want DUMB!

The best would be 2, SPST switches in a one unit sized wall box.
But I’ll settle for a SPST with a remote of some kind.
At least 5 amps would be nice.

Any suggestions?
All the Best,
Jeff

Couldn’t you use something like this and just wire it behind the switch? Assuming a switch leg is in the box.

I am by no means an electrical expert but, I would surely try it.

Yeah, I miss the X10s, got like 4 of the sample-kits when they came out for cheap (30bux? 20?).

Crappy garbage POS protocol, though. I remember having so many issues of pressing “brighten 1 step” and having it “scroll” to max brightness and not stop. Press “dim 1 step” and then “scroll” down to 0 and not stop. Urg.

But I did like the clicky relay on/off modules, though. Wish they made wallswitches with those, vs SS dimmers.

I take it you looked and X10 isn’t made anymore, at least not in the old non-smartphone-“smart”-app variety?

like this?

That looks to be a good solution - or one of the similar type of thingies. I’ll see which seems to have the smallest receiver. hopefully the metal box has enough room.
I kept looking for a replacement remote wall light switch. The only ones I could find were in the “smart” universe.
Thanks for the link!

LB, I was heavy into X-10 in the last house. Had the PC programmable controller that had the lights & plugs playing all sorts of games for different times. Eventually the switches started getting flaky.
Now everything wants to connect to some server in the cloud just to turn on a frigging light.
All The Best,
Jeff

TD, That looks like it controls a box that plugs into a wall socket. Then a device/light plugs into the box.
I need something that fits into a wall mounted 120v light switch box.
Thanks for your suggestion. The Co. does have a thingy that is sort of what I’m looking for, but the remote switch is a fake wall switch.
All the Best,
Jeff

I was faced with a similar problem when I wanted to control two lights where one switch was at the bottom of the stairs for an overhead chandelier and the other switch was at the top of the stairs controlling that light plus an overhead light. I bought a simple 110V 433 mhz two channel receiver and a couple of 433 mhz transmitters. You can mount the transmitters anywhere within about 150 feet of the receiver. I put the receiver inside the space where the two upstairs switches were located and covered the opening with a plain plastic box cover. One transmitter with two “buttons” is on that cover and the other is downstairs with just one “button”. These are capacitive switches activated by just passing your hand over the front of the transmitter. They operate using a A27 12V battery that lasts at least a year between replacement.

Here is what a transmitter looks like and it is the European 68 X 68 mm (2.7” square) and about 1/4” thick. 433MHz Stick Switch Wall Touch Panel Wireless RF Remote Control Transmitter | eBay $10.50 for a one gang remote in either black or white. Sticks to the wall with a piece of foam or the back plate can be screwed to a fixed object.

The receiver is small enough to easily fit inside the switch box. 433MHz AC 110V 220V 1CH Wireless Remote Control Switch Module Receiver RATNA | eBay Cost is less than $5 with shipping included. I’ve had these installed for about 3 years now. Works perfectly and eliminates the problem of how to wire up a remote wall switch.

Yeh. They had a good idea, but implemented it lousily. Protocol was garbage, hardware flaked out, can’t even recall how many f’n antennas I had to “replace” with a piece of wire, etc.

Yeah, that’s not gonna happen…

Here’s Jeff at home:

You know me well…
And my new wheelchair has Bluetooth so my wife can drive me around…
All the Best,
Jeff

Jeff…

what is the Brand Name
and Model Number for
your Wheelchair?

my Mother needs
something similar
and we are trying
to accommodate.

TD,
It’s a Permobil brand. Here’s a link to the site.
https://www.permobil.com/en-us/products?category=PowerWheelchairs

These things are only sold through different Co. reps (I believe). They are stupid expensive. Like new car expensive.
Weighs 400lbs. Headlights and turn signals….

The rep came out to see me in the hospital, measured me, and then delivered the chair to our house for a final fitting and instructions.
Drove 300 miles from Dallas to deliver it.

I don’t have the Bluetooth option installed on mine yet cause I still can use a joystick.

A quick search showed up a few

https://www.walmart.com/ip/MAJESTIC-2022-New-Remote-Controlled-Electric-Wheelchair-Foldable-Mobility-Aid/807626730

Don’t know anything about them or the company.
Getting one from someplace that can service the thing seems like the way to go unless significant $$ can be saved.

One thing I learned about Medicare is they will pay for a wheelchair. But just one.
Many folks need a chair and go to some store and get a manual chair. Insurance is happy to pay the few hundred bucks for the chair.

Oh you now need a power chair? Sorry we bought you one already. You can reapply in 5 years…

Hope you find something suitable for your mom. Hope she is doing well.
All the Best,
Jeff

thanks for all your information.

this just might be what she wants.
bottom line: she wants to win in the powerchair races.
really?…well, people race riding lawnmowers, too….
anyway, her local high school has a track which is used for
all those “different” races after the Track Season has passed.
there are lots of restrictions and rules, but lots of fun, too.

these strange races benefit her local Food Bank.
there are entry fees, tickets, reverse raffles, etc.
here is a “generic” Youtube which will illustrate:

You could pursue the roundabout solution of smart bulbs. They can be controlled through a phone app.

Three for $15 from Cree: Amazon.com

These particular bulbs do not need a dedicated hub.

I used to think those wifi bulbs were a good idea. The issue I have with them is that if you have one screwed into a switch-controlled fixture and the light is switched off with the wired switch, it must be turned on with the wired switch. Similarly, if the app is used to turn it off the app must be used to turn it back on. I still think remote control of electrical devices is cool, but there are drawbacks.

For me the biggest annoyance is actually the delay you get when you flip the physical switch to turn them on. I assume it’s because they are reading a config file on startup.

I bought a couple to act as a “sunrise alarm.” I installed them in my bedroom fixture but I think they are going in a lamp instead.

That being said, if remote control is what you want, these have it in spades. You could control the lights in the whole house from your doorstep.

As you said though, having to use the app to turn them back on could get old.

TD,
Here is a link to a wheelchair “info” site.
Lots of different models described.
One of the 4x4 or better yet the tracked version ready to literally crush the competition.
6mph seems to be a max speed for most. Bet it’s some Fed. safety standard.
Some chairs seem to offer a higher speed option.

Then there are things like this -
I’d have one if I lived someplace where I could get to somplace nifty to “Wheel”
All the Best,
Jeff

t

That “Rig” is impressive, thanks for posting about that.

So if i understand what was posted earlier, if a person needs a device for mobility assistance, aka wheelchair, then medicare will pay or help pay for the first device purchased, but not for a second. So you have to be a smart buyer and do your research early. i wonder if the “Rig” would qualify.

It’d be totally kewl to be able to float around in the air, like that fat guy with the terminal zits in “Dune”…

KB,
The Rig is not a medical device, so ya’ got pony up your own $$.

Yeah, the insurance Co. will look to anything to their advantage.
Then again a hospital charging $50 for a aspirin…
All the Best,
Jeff
