Y'all may want to read this before thinking about getting a light from me.

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?334872-Re-modded-cutdown-Mag-1D

Turns out one of the lights I sold was in rough shape. Possibly from being dropped, but from the posters point of view, it was a total wreck and from looking at it torn apart, it is, so I may just go ahead and stop the mods and take the loss and call it a day. Poor design, poor workmanship and it's there for all to see.Embarassed

What bothered me was just happening to come across it on CPF. No prior knowledge or chance to correct it myself. That's just not right in my book.

Anyone who has a light from me and wants to return it, just PM me and I will take care of it. I think this was a one off and I didn't do any more like that, but I will take any back, that you do not feel is good.

Don't sweat it, it's the typical CPF mentality. That is why I don't sell my Drop ins over there, let "nailbender" have at it for a lot more than I charge. I am really sorry if they offended you over there, but that is not an uncommon response on that site. I have heard nothing but great things about your lights over here and that is all that matters to me.

Don't worry about it ONE BIT. Please.

One problem was that you charged too little - seriously. The work was comparable to lights that I've seen for $200+

No sweat, we still love ya here. :)

Well, unfortunately, what techjunkie said was true, it was not done professionally and seeing him tear it down with photos to back it up, sure makes it plain as day to me.

All I can do at this point, is to give it up and sell off the hosts I have lying around and sell all the parts off when they come in. It will be a big loss, but I really have no choice. His thread showcases a guy that shouldn't be touching a mod and he didn't lie, it's all plain to see.

In a way it's a good thing to see someone else tear down your work and show you all the faults. It's a way to see my stuff in a different light and when looking at that mess, I now realize how poorly I have done and that even I wouldn't want to buy something like that, so it's a good thing to face reality.

I just don't like the way it was done without giving me any recourse other than to take the hit, be embarrased by the whole online community and leave in shame. Too bad that had to happen that way. I wouldn't do that to someone else.

+1. I just stay away from there anymore.

yeah, i don't know about that light in particular, but you're very detailed and open w/ everything you've built (and i've seen) here...and you charge what amounts to pretty much nothing for your time...so it would be tough to be too unhappy as a customer.

the only reason I haven't bought anything from you, is you already took all the fun out of it...wth am I gonna do w/ a light that is ready to go ?! lol

I say, do what you like to do and enjoy, don't let it bother you.

that's easy to say, I know. I made a living for awhile working on other peoples stuff (guns), and to some extent, building custom stuff. It can be stressful (although a very different kind of stress than working in a f@%@$ office). Trying to balance thoroughness w/ cost...and time...

File work takes patience, but continually improving that balance requires a much more rare form. Learn from it, and stick with it ;)

Techjunkie didn't buy your light. There's still plenty of interest here.

One could say, he has a vested cash interest in trashing your build, as he charges far more.

You have never misrepresented your lights, or how they are fabricated/assembled. Anyone wanting one gets to see what they are buying ahead of time.

Wait a second...

From the way I read it the OP posted this in 2008. Why so long for some one to dig it up now?

Am I reading that wrong?

ok, so i just read your next post.

who the heck starts out an expert - aside from God (and mozart )?

Don't give up. Just do it professionally next time and charge accordingly, i.e. professionally.

CPF link is busted anyway...

Didn't notice that.

Wow! That was over three years ago. The more you shouldn't mind it then.

Oh, man... don't beat yourself up over it... ever stop to think that they are jealous of your talents? What's done is done, and you can't turn back-but whatever you do, keep doing your mods! Don't give them that much power over you by quitting-then they win.

I for one would but your lights without hesitation, if I didn't do my own already.

Rich

No it’s a fresh thread, don’t know why it shows 2008. It was done recently. The light in question is here.

It sold on CPF.

Aw man. I read everyone of you posts I see cause I know im most likely learn something more than just which product to hit the add-to-cart button on.

Dont be given up your hobby. Just Cause of that. Man Up .. Shake It Off and get back to choppin new life in to those hosts ... They Need Ya Man.... We Need ya Man... No you cant have my beer. Fine just one.

I feel any home mod project you get from anyone should not be publicly called out before contacting the seller. It's just mean. Now the OP here was not the original recipient of the light, so you may never know who reached out to him to address his issue. Even with that said I think the OP of this "fix" should have thought twice about making this public.

People appreciate your craft. Do not let it bring you down or contribute to a reason to quit.

enjoy and continue to share your talent :)

Scientists do "hard argument" and are used to it from each other; to outsiders it sounds vicious and petty and nasty and sarcastic. (Well, in fact, it is all those things.)* They take that as the price for really getting scientific work torn apart and every flaw and every fuzzy spot found -- or they _hope_ that happens. Sometimes some flaw isn't seen for a long time after publication and that means other work has to be redone.

I'd urge you to just pretend to be grateful (as the sergeant said to the kids in the trenches as the artillery started falling) -- and keep doing the work you do, knowing it can be better and taking the value from the comments without taking injury or discouragement.

(Peter Watts has a wonderful piece on this at http://www.rifters.com/crawl/?p=886 in which he writes:

"... That’s how science works. It’s not a hippie love-in; it’s rugby. Every time you put out a paper, the guy you pissed off at last year’s Houston conference is gonna be laying in wait. Every time you think you’ve made a breakthrough, that asshole supervisor who told you you needed more data will be standing ready to shoot it down....

This is how it works: you put your model out there in the coliseum, and a bunch of guys in white coats kick the shit out of it. If it’s still alive when the dust clears, your brainchild receives conditional acceptance. It does not get rejected. This time.

Yes, there are mafias. There are those spared the kicking because they have connections. There are established cliques .... I know a couple of people who will probably never get credit for the work they’ve done, for the insights they’ve produced. But the insights themselves prevail. ... The credit may not go to those who deserve it; but the field will have moved forward.

Science is so powerful that it drags us kicking and screaming towards the truth despite our best efforts to avoid it. And it does that at least partly fueled by our pettiness and our rivalries. Science is alchemy: it turns shit into gold ...."

This kind of 'hacking' at flashlights is like that too. Some of you are honestly good kind people who share encouragement with others. Some people can do the tech but not the kindness. I can't yet do much of the tech, trying to learn in my spare time, and I can fake the kindness (grin) or try to.

Well, "incoming" -- duck your head, plug your ears -- and don't give up, eh?

You do work a whole lot better than I do. I can learn from you -- and faster to the extent you learn from others, even the harsher ones.

Old-Lumens

Like I said in my PM; I would be proud to own one of your Mags and the interest in your work, on this forum, remains.

edit:

CPF would not load when I first read this post so, didn't get to read the original thread until now.

I can see how you might have felt the way you did but everybody in the thread conducted themselves quite well. I honestly don't think any disrespect was intended and I still say that we all would lose if you stop doing what you do.

shootfirstthenaskFoy

In reading it again it seems this can be hashed out between all involved :) There are some good people in the world. What is seen as harsh seems to have been addressed by TJ and the original buyer.

Don't give up, over this. At all. For one second.

Even if all he said was written in a harsher tone, it's no reason to give up.

From what I can tell, you enjoy your hobby. Keep enjoying it and let it make you happy. I'm sure it has made many other people happy as well.

And probably the most important thing: the flashlight looks like it's been used as a sledgehammer. Like someone hit concrete with it. After such a hit it's no wonder it broke.

Oh, here's an idea. Make a flashlight that will survive that. But please don't sell it for a budget price.

All the best,

Viktor
