Found this while strolling through my local Wallyworld, marked as Great Value brand, looked to be a repackaged Feit 73992, opened the box, and, sure enough, there was a Feit sticker on the back of the tube.
No price sticker on the box, so I asked an associate to scan it: $24.99. So, I bought the two they had in stock, as I’ve been looking to upgrade my shop lighting(the old fluorescent(4’ dual T12) fixture still works, but it’s starting to buzz occasionally).
I figured this was worth a try, as Walmart’s return policy is very good, in case they were defective, or junk. Got them home, plugged them in, and they both worked, so, off to the shop to see how they stack up.
After comparing them, the 2 led tubes, seem to be about as bright as the old fluorescent setup, as perceived by the Mark I eyeball, that is.
The color temperature is definitely a bit warmer than the old tubes, and more pleasant, to me. The old setup has been there for ~15 years, the new tubes have a 3 year warranty, we’ll see how they hold up.
Fluorescents are terrible. I don't care if they produce more light. Never again. If I only cared about lumens per bulb, then I'd still have incandescent bulbs in my lamps. That said, 1800 lumens for that fixture is disappointing since that's not much more than the 100W equivalent Cree bulbs, and is half of what the Feit fixture at Costco produced. I have the ~4000 lumen Feit fixture, and I'm quite happy with that. I wish I bought more.
If all you have ever used were crap fluorescents of course they are terrible.
and the walmart grade junk just reinforces that mindset.
the ones I use have been fine.
But I avoid noname cheap stuff.
shoplights tend to mostly in thatt class unless you fix up old ones or get industrial stuff.
leds are no different.walmart and their ilk sabotage progress of new tech by pushing their cheap, crappy version.
poisons the minds of shoppers who are dissapointed and assume they are all crap.
Ha, yeah, I'm sure the military and every office I've ever worked in was buying Walmart quality fluorescents. Nope. Good riddance to that junk. If flourescent quality is good enough for you, then congratulations. I'll stick with incandescent if I need lots of light in a small form factor, otherwise it's LED all the way.
you overly sensitive to flicker,uv,or just ugly color rendering?
uv seems to be a real non issue unless one has a medical condition.and you are just plain in trouble everywhere if the low level given off by fluorescents is a problem.
good tubes abd ballasts eliminate the other 2.
one thing leds have in their favor in a shoplite is the directionality.that alone is good reason to use them in this application.
building my own soon with luxeon altilons.hey if they are good enough for audi headlights they are good enough for my shoplites and desklamps.
It's probably the color, and every office I've been in with them has some noise coming from them, although usually it can only be heard after everyone else goes home. But it's probably the color, at least initially, but I expect it to have less color drift over the years too. In the other thread about the Feit shop light, I report that the lux was pretty even from 0-45°. Would I like them to be even brighter? Of course! I'd love a pair of tubes 8' overhead to put 750 lux on my work surface. It'll get there eventually.
We have a Feit 73992 that I do not even know where it came from, then my wife ordered: a box of 4ea Hyperikon, p/n HyperBC-4C-405, T8 Leds. The Feit is not as bright, but was easy to install. Just hang on two provided wire cables and plug it into to a recepticle. The Hyperikons we first just replaced the T-8s with them, but there was a problem (probably bad ballasts). Then I rewired the lamp holders, eliminating the ballasts and then they work beautifly! I hooked all the wires at one end together and wire nutted them to the white lead, and then the same for the other end and wire nutted that bunch to the black lead and plugged it in. Works great!
