628 weaponlight replacement

Hi,

I’m trying to build an LED replacement for a 628 style weaponlight, primarily as the lenses are hard to come by and are generally acrylic so can not deal with the heat from LEDs. I would also like to move to an 18650 as this is what my other flashlights use.

The tail cap thread must be the same as a surefire as it is how it attaches to the handguard. I had looked at other complete flashlights but the tail cap thread seems different on a lot of them.

I would like to keep using a larger head like the Z32 although I understand this may need to have the lamp shimmed to ensure good conductivity for heat dissipation as it’s originally designed to run an incandescent bulb with a recoil absorption system.

My current body won’t accept an 18650 which is why I am looking at changing the whole thing. So far I have only found a Z32 style head and 18650 6P body on Ali although not sure of which lamp to use. I’m used to using a Cloud Defensive Rein so would like to try and achieve a half decent output for this build.

If anyone could advise further on the above, other options and or lamps that would be great.

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum,

You seem to know quite a bit about the different lights and cells, but some of the folks here can surely give you some options and you should be good to go Nad.

Thanks for joining the gang, Nad!

I have a couple of you around here somewhere.

Where did I put my Nads, again?

The biggest issue I’ve had with weapon lights is the caliber and action used. Most lights will last with no modification on an AR-15 style platform. However an AK action will kill a light in only a few rounds. The bolt carrier smacking the receiver is the biggest culprit. For violent actions the LED driver and pill cavity needs to be epoxied. If not the battery will bash the board into the pill usually cracking it. Heavy springs on both ends help.
