As I understand it the newer XM-L2 U3 LEDs have a higher Vf and don't have the max output capability when over driven. They cap out at around 4.5A and 1300 lumens IIRC. The XP-L emitters don't have that limitation and can still be cranked to deliver 1600 or more lumens. This is what makes them the better choice in an over driven maxed out torch. ;)
Gotcha, thanks JM! Good thing I kept a bunch of the older ones! I ordered a few XPL’s to try out, good to know they can take more current! Now to order centering rings!
I agree with JohnnyMac…I have had similar experiences with the latest batch of XM-L2 U2s from Hank and Richard. Also, the latest XP-G2s seem to be the same way.
But in regards to this light, it looks pretty sweet.
Right. XP-L is the successor to XM-L2 (like XB-H is to XP-G2) and have a little more lumens from the datasheet, lose less lumens when dedome and less tint shift.
Its called the XHP50 but has higher volts requirement and multi-die.
