Don’t use protected cells in this light.
First, it will not work at it’s full power.
Second, button top protected cells are longer than unprotected flat top cells, which will put a huge amount of pressure in the springs and will eventually damage them.
Third, it is probable that the head doesn’t screw in completely tight.

So, better to use unprotected ~~flat~~ button top cells, and high-drain cells, in case you want to have the max output from it!

Flat tops won't work or at least are not recommended as the ROT66 gen 2 has a brass ring as positive contact for all three cells. The positive cell contacts ride on that ring while screwing the head on. Unprotected button top cells really are the only choice that makes sense here.

Well, then why am I using 3 unprotected flat top Sony VTC6 on my ROT66 GEN II and it works flawlessly?

Depends on the cell, on some the flat top actually protrudes a bit or the insulation can be squished down a bit, so that'd work, on others you'd be risking damaging the insulation around the positive contact, hence "at least not recommended"

In my cells they are flat and I guess they do not protrude at all.
Still, given your well stated point, I edited my suggestion above, to prevent users from damaging the light or the cells.
In any case I guess it is better to forget those Imalent cells in this light!

In my cells they are flat and I guess they do not protrude at all.

well i avoid this light then. I want to use the protected Imalent Cells. I dont care if the Light has 10.000 Lumen or 8800 Lumen on Turbo, but if the protected dont fit, its not the right Flashlight for me, sadly.

The batteries get pushed to one side while screwing on the head (since the button tops rub against the positive contact ring in the head) while also slowly getting pushed down because, well, you're screwing the head down.

120 grite sand paper will knock that edge right down to where the battery damage will not happen. Shouldnt be much sanding either. i know that is annoying to have to do, but at least its not visible 99% of the time.

Yeah I already rounded those off using a stone from my spyderco sharpmaker. I was afraid to use sandpaper because it probably would've left a lot of unwanted scratches. Either way, I doubt mine is the only one that has those sharp edges, so I'd expect pretty much every ROT66 out there to somewhat scrape on the battery wrappers. Not good design imo.

Good to hear you already knoked off the edges. I have seen many lights with internal carriers have this happen, not a design flaw IMO, its a manufacturing shortcoming. I agree the edges should be “hit” before the piece gets ano, but i can see why it is overlooked too. no excuses though. But, hasn’t stopped me from ordering one either. its a common occurence.

I like the idea of using a stone, easier to not scratch the whole inside you are correct. I’ll be doing that if it needs it when it comes in.

For the inside edges of the battery tube- I just rounded off the sharp edges of mine with 180 grit sandpaper cut into approx 1.5” x 4” pieces & wrapped tightly around a pencil. Trick I learned in woodworking for accurately hitting difficult/small areas. Made sure I had the eraser end of pencil sticking out of the sandpaper in case it made contact with the inside of the battery tube, just to reduce the amount of unnecessary scratches. Came out pretty good, defintely rounded the corners off much better. Thought I’d share In case anyone wants to try it.

Oh, and I also wrapped complete exterior of the battery tube with painters tape, threads to threads. Just to eliminate getting sanding dust on outside finish/orings/etc.
