I have a non-BLF Mini-02 (from FT, naturally), and I’d say that if you compared the 3 lights, the SC52 and the UniqueFire were neck-and-neck, with the UniqueFire maybe slightly brighter, and then the Mini-02 might be slightly behind both of those 2. I think that the Mini-02 also seemed a little more floody than either the SC52 or the UniqueFire. I’ll caveat all of this again that this is just to my eyes, but I was just out with all 3 lights and I still came to the same conclusions.
I wouldn’t judge the TF-R2 too quickly (I have a bunch of them now . The beam is indeed ringy, but it’s also like a pinpoint, with a very small hotspot, and it doesn’t look so great indoors or on a white wall, but I just took one of them out when I took the 3 smaller lights, and it is surprisingly bright outside, and it throws pretty far, again, in my opinion. Nevertheless, it’s real significance is still somewhat P60 drop-in compatibility, and I have an XM-L drop-in in one of my and that is much better than the original emitter/driver in the TF-R2.
I just got my Jetbeam RRT01 from Fasttech today and it is simply amazing! Brighter than the SC52, build quality is outstanding, and the UI is the best in the entire world...infinite modes and one simple movement. This thing is can go so low that even in total darkness you can barely see the emitter with night adapted eyes. From there (0.005 lumens) it smoothly ramps up to 500 lumens as quickly or s slowly as you want with a simple twist of your finger on the magnetic control ring. It simply doesn't get any simpler or more versatile than that.
Here I have the exposure on my camera turned all the way up and you still have to look very hard to see the glow. ;)
Just so you know there really is a light in there I cranked it up quite a bit. mind you, this is still taken with the exposure turned as high as it goes. :)
SRK = epic. Definite must have for any photon-junkie.
I actually have the Fandyfire UV-S5 clone which rocks too. Kind of wish I had gotten NW SRK instead… whatever, still awesome.
Zebralights are amazing lights. Pricey, but worth it if you are into lights and appreciate well made things. I have an sc80w, not the 52, or any other models. Would love more if I could afford them!
If I were you, I would wait for other tints to become available from ZL. They offered outstanding neutrals, and even a few warms, in the past. Should be worth the wait.
One to add to your list —-
L3 Illumination L10 with high CRI nichia 219 emitter, 4 modes (firefly). Great light. Must buy IMO. Only $25 from sbflashlights. One thing of note: white finish is paint and not as durable as ano. I still like my white one. A must buy. Buy buy BUY!! lol
Everyone needs some high CRI in their life. I didn’t see anything on your list…
The L10 is a great introduction to high CRI neutral. XML 4C is another good neutral with decent CRI, but the two are quite a bit different and tricky to compare directly.
Definitely need to add a warm tint something-err-other to your arsenal too……
Roche F12 is arguably the nicest budget 18650 tube light around. It can be had with warm tint XML 7C from fasttech. I really like mine. (Read up on compatible cells before buying.) Also available as an excellent host if you want to build your own.
If you want to go P60 instead/too I highly recommend XPG2 7B/C/whatever. XPG2 is my favorite, and I like warm 7s. There aren’t any warm tint XPG2 lights available off-the-shelf that I know of. (Would love to know!!) Again, 4B/C range is great for neutral XPG2s.
A lot of people don’t like warms as much as I do. But you’ve come this far and read all this, so give warms a try lol. And I mean try them in real usage, not boring whitewall shots! Go outside and look at some colorful red, orange, or brown stuff. The orangeyish light really makes colors pop in a cool way.
Hope that helps.
To summarize:
SRK / UV-S5
wait for SC52w
L2 L10 nichia 4 mode
XPG2 or XML2 7C something-err-other
this… my plan was for the TF-R2 to be an alternative p60 host from the beginning…the more i use my flashlights the more i tend to lean towards larger hotspots/flood/spill… XM-L2 incoming!
@JohnnyMac - that looks awesome! thanks for adding to the list! I’ll have to rethink my focus…
@Haterade - thanks for reminding me of the L10… i knew it had a good firefly + nichia (you really are the nichia/high cri champion of BLF!… flashlights are for seeing in the dark… might as well see in ‘colour’ as well, eh?! lol! ;))
edit
actually years ago I came across high CRI halogens for displaying artwork or use in the studio… wanted my whole house done in them… they were very, very cost prohibitive at the time… when I was a student I splurged and spent $35 on a single high CRI daylight bulb for my studio absolutely loved it!… maybe i should check again… it seems prices have come down…
or get a bunch of L10 nichias and stick them all over the house!!
