Allow me to introduce myself: greetings from the center of the Netherlands

I believe I’ve seen a general topic in the past to introduce yourself, but after some searching and a lot of scrolling in the “Introduce yourself” sub-forum, I can’t seem to find that specific topic, so (somewhat reluctantly) I will start a new topic “about myself”!

Let me introduce myself: my name is Michel, I’m in my mid thirties and I live in the center of the Netherlands. Living in the center of the Netherlands also (partially) explains my nickname here; I grew up next to a (now former) airbase and was already fascinated by aviation. We even had an American Fighter Squadron stationed here for 40 years, but unfortunately they left/were relocated when I was still quite young, so most of what I know about the squadron is learned by the internet, videos and books.

I have been a longtime reader here on the forum (certainly for the past 3+ years, and (with a gap) even a short period even longer ago), but I never took the step to create an account here, until a couple of weeks ago.
Even though I wasn’t participating actively, I was learning a lot here on the forum, which gave me confidence in starting to do some minor ‘modding’ on flashlights. It started with simple spring bypasses and driver and “complete LED” (=already soldered LED’s) to the point that I’m now also reflowing LED’s myself.

In terms of my ‘collection’ of flashlights: I keep true to the name of this forum; almost all of my lights fully comply to the budget-category! I own a couple of Sofirn, Wurkkos, Convoy and Astrolux lights, aswell as some other (small) flashlights from other brands.

Currently I’m working on my Astrolux FT03, which came with an SST-40, but I’ve swapped it to a SFT-40 (from Kaidomain), but I’m not completely happy with the beam profile and by the looks of it, it could be reflowed even (slightly) closer to the MPCB, so I’m going to attempt that. (There is not much to be gained though, so I’m not having high hopes it will make enough difference to create a beam profile that I’m completely happy with, but we will see!)

Let’s finish with which flashlights I’m currently having (high) on my wishlist:
-Convoy L21B with SFT-40; I don’t really need another thrower with an SFT-40, but on the other hand; it seems like a really well performing flashlight with that LED and would like to compare it against my FT03 with SFT-40
-A flashlight with an SBT-90.2. I don’t have a specific flashlight in mind, I just want one with this LED. I have to admit though that I really like the Wurkkos TS30S PRO, but to be honest; it’s more than I would like to spend on a flashlight right now!
-A (nice) LEP. Again, as stated above: I don’t have a specific brand/model in mind, I just would like to add a LEP to my collection, but again (as stated above) at this moment they are still in a price range that is a bit more than I would like to spend on a single flashlight.

For now I think I’ve talked/typed more than enough, so lets keep it at this for now!

Hey there, happy to have you here! Sounds like you already have a great start, you’ll fit right in.

3 Thanks

You’re going to love it here, Wingman!
It appears you know quite a bit about flashlights already.
As you already know, it’s tough to go wrong with Sofirn/Wurrkos/Convoy.
My favorite emitter used to be the SFT40.
Now it’s the XHP70.3 HI.
That emitter doesn’t throw as far, but it throws far enough for me, and it provides plenty of flood at the same time.
The XHP70.3 HI probably works best with a large diameter reflector to provide extra throw. :+1:

Hi! Welcome, I’ve just created an account after several years as well… living in the west… Rotterdam

I’ve got the wurkkos ts30s with sbt90.2… and few Hank lights coming!

“Een schaap over de dam” as we say haha.

2 Thanks

Hoi buurman, welkom bij BLF.

AKA

Howdy neighbour, welcome to BLF.

Welcome on BLF, have a good one !

Thanks for the welcome! (Bedankt voor het warme welkom!)

@raccoon: I’ve got 2 lights now with a SFT-40: the FT03 and a Wurkkos FC12. In the FC12 it gives a nice balance between throw and spill and I really like it. The color of my FC12, ‘champagne’, is probably the favorite color I have in my collection at this moment and I also like the original type of knurling they gave this light. (Biggest downside of the FC12: it’s a bit long for an 18650 light)

With regards to the XHP70.3 HI; I was already (secretly) thinking of doing a build with it, although I haven’t gotten to the point of really making plans for it. Also have to look for a driver that can drive it properly, but that obviously also depends of the host that I will use.

At this moment I haven’t got a XHP70(.2/3) in my collection anyway, so that’s another reason why I wan’t one!

Also welcome to you @Ortix , glad to have you here!

Welcome aboard, good to see “young” people taking up the task! Once you start re-flowing emitters there’s no going back!

I like the SFT40 and have put it in quite a few lights. The SFT70 is more problematic to me, trying to source the best driver to fully utilize its potential is proving a daunting task! Looking to drive it around 7A, would like that to be from a single 21700 but…

Actually reflowed my first SFT70 yesterday and missed. No light. Didn’t have time to address it but it appears I didn’t get proper contact… even pressed it down while the solder was liquid for that tight to the board fit… managed to blemish the die surface by doing so and yeah, no light.

Will start over. I tend to do that a lot. I’m new. :joy::rofl:
(Anything but, just forget a lot which is a mild statement for a pretty big problem)

Enjoy! Be careful not to fall in too deep…

Dale

Welcome you too, have a good one !

Welcome, have fun!

Welcome to BLF fellow Dutchie!
It looks like you are already infected with the virus
If you are into modding, maybe i have something around.

1 Thank

Thanks for the welcome all!

@DB_Custom I know that you are a longtime member here; I seen your name pass bye a lot of times over the past couple of years! Good to know though that even ‘flashlight-veterans’ also have trouble sometimes when reflowing a LED! (I obviously had some not-so-succesful attempts of my own…)

@Yokiamy bedankt/thanks mede-‘kaaskop’! I’m a bit hesitant to call myself a “modder”, given what I’ve seen others on this forum can do with/to flashlights! Compared to them (and a lot of others) I’m still an absolute ‘rookie’!

Welcome Wingman and Ortix,
This is a good place to learn, alot of good people here to learn from and discuss flashlight and things related.
O, as Dale said; theres no turning back🤗… we’re in the rabbit hole of flashlight interest … sliding fast

'licht aan!

I find that when you jump into a “simple” mod with just barely enough time to… say, swap emitters… that’s when the dangdest things go wrong!

Don’t rush, stay focused, avoid shortcuts and at least try to mod without interruptions. ( good luck with that! )

Dale

You are certainly not talking about me; I’m certainly not a man of wealth and my sense of ‘taste’ is arguable at best, hahaha!

@DB_Custom I fully agree on that!

1 Thank

I’m not a man of wealth, either.
And the only taste I have is poor taste! :stuck_out_tongue:

@DB_Custom damn, I completely missed that referance!
