Very brief overview as I received several MX70’s as of tonite……
Is it worth $9.99? Oh H*LL yes. (This was $39.99 about a month ago.)
I’m really liking the UI the more I play with it. Intuitive, straightforward, and practical. And the tail switch with the electronic side switch handedly work well together. Moonlight mode is highly appreciated.
The overall quality is quite good indeed. Surprisingly good. Both switches are tight and crisp. Fit and finish is above average pretty much all around. The extras like the decently made largish holster and NCR-type battery are a bonus. They even throw in an extra USB-micro rubber-like port cover - it is robust especially on how secure it anchors into the flash side switch housing.
Butt here’s where I’ll tell ya where this flash really shines. (No pun intended)……………
If you’re into deep forest hiking or anywhere where there’s basically lots of green around you (like I have), then buy this flash for that alone. On the TCR scale I give it a 9.5 for true rendition of particularly greens, then blues, onto rose reds/bougainvillea, and lavenderish/agapanthus/society garlic purples/blues (think flowers - or perhaps even bodies of bluish/greenish water). These are objects that I’m familiar with so take this in consideration.
Most impressive is the contrast given between these color spans.
On yellows, woody browns and beiges, I give a TCR of 7.5 for those. These did not rendition as well at night vs how I know them to be in decent cloudless sunlight or around 12:00 noon. However its contrast strengths serve to attenuate those shortcomings.
The TCR rating was done at around 10pm on a waxing clear-night crescent moon, so quite dark outside with very little to none artificial lighting around me.
Consensus to my findings of its outstanding performance within those specific color arenas isn’t available, yet. Maybe one or two BLFers will provide a TCR. Butt I don’t expect any surprises based on past experience since I have excellent vision/color sensitivity and have no color blindness issues.
Buy at least one. :+1:
PS. One other important aspect I forgot to mention which is relatively rare these days - especially for $9.99.
The tailswitch has a momentary-on option. Wonderfully handy at many times.
PSS. Another appreciated feature is it has a tailswitch lockout.
PSSS. And yes it tailstands. Solidly.
PSSSS. Be prepared to see a VERY deep reflector for its size. Reminds me of the Jacobs A60. Which as ya know became quite the collectible.
PSSSSS. Buy at least three and there’s Free Shipping even without Amazon Prime. Screamin’ deal, folks.
PSSSSSS. Not that this is a BFD, but these come serial numbered on the tube body in nice discrete crisp white lettering. I think it gives it a ‘touch o’ class’ for $9.99.
PSSSSSSS. Your grip isn’t gonna slip off this flash easily that’s fer sure. Plenty of ribbing, including the tailcap. The decently smooth anodizing and machining is pleasant enuff to the touch. In other words, they’ve beveled most of the edges.
PSSSSSSSS. Another feature I find most appreciated is the UI Turbo override. Any mode yer currently in can be overridden into Turbo by a simple side switch double-click. Except for strobe/beacon wherein the only way to get into those is ya have hold down the sideswitch. The tail switch remembers the side switched last mode you were in - again except for strobe/beacon. I definitely like that.
PSSSSSSSSS. The holster is better made than most in this price category. First of all it fits the MX70 tightly enuff so it doesn’t rattle around. Velcro secured top strap. Secondly it has two snap male and female brass buttons riveted to a strap to affix around yer belt. Who in h*ll likes to havta take their belt off to put it on or take it off like with those cheaper solid strap loop ones?
