Hi guys, I’m Kent and new here. I’m on enough Internet forums to know that newbies are the bane of the grey beards but, hey, ya gotta start somewhere.
I’ve got flashlight fever, already bought a few different types but don’t have electronics background beyond a basic understanding and some computer/software experience. So, dangerous.
I have an UltraFire WF-502B CREE XM-L T6 950LM 5 Mode light I really like. I understand it is similar to the SureFire 6P and uses P60 style emitters and bezels. Thus, it seems to be a fairly mainstream, customizable light, right?
I would like to use this light for a weapon light on my carbine with a momentary-contact remote pressure switch on the weapon handgrip. But, I would like to mod the light to only use Strobe mode. I chatted with Craig at IlluminationSupply.com and he said you could pretty much get any driver you’d like, and put in a PWM chip that pulses at a low frequency. That’d do it except he doesn’t sell what I need.
I’ve fished around here enough to know I’m not the first to ask about strobe-only mode lights and I don’t want to resurrect the holy war about whether strobe has a purpose. To me it does, I think it is well-suited to tactical building entry and situations where you want to light up an area but want to deprive any opponent of clear vision. I think the 1000lm strobe makes it hard for an opponent to see past the glare and it also confuses the eye enough to make it hard to get a “fix” on the illuminator (me).
Anyway, has anyone done this particular mod and/or can you offer any advice on exactly how to do it?
Thanks for the comments and for having me. This looks like a great forum. I hope to learn a lot from you guys.
theres a few people here that flash custom firmware to the nanj driver that should be able to help.
edit: and dont worry about being a newb around here, this aint like most places
Welcome to the family, Kent! I can't help you with a strobe only mod but I'm happy to see you here. Like Pulsar said, this is not like other places. I hope you get your answer and decide to stay around. :)
I recently picked up DrJones drive with his lupodrv firmware. I actually have not gotten to use it yet but there is a mode locking feature. It is programmable so you can either set only the strobe mode, or set more than just strobe (so you can use it as a flashlight too) but lock the strobe mode in when needed.
I actually plan to use the driver in a solarforce l2p as a weaponlight (for airsoft). I will lock it in strobe when mounted but when not mounted, I can still use it as a normal flashlight by unlocking it and switching to other modes.
However, if you are using this for real work and lives are on the line, I would look into a more high quality light/system or get a really well built drop in made (probably fully potted if you are using it on a weapon).
