I want to dedome some MGT2’s, but it’s a high risk operation as the phosphor layer is weakly bonded. I also have some failed dedomed xml’s and 219’s (accidental dedomes on the Nichias) laying around. Are there any phosphor recipes that have been tried with success?
i doubt its doable, otherwise Cree would not spend so much on R&D
so my suggestion is to not attempt the dedoming on an mt-g2, unless your willing to lose its purchase price, and consider it a bonus if it succeeds
How about the opposite - a DIY recipe to remove the phosphor without killing the LED? I wanna make a bloooo one...
I tried lightly scraping it off on an old worthless XML, but it ended up with only one tiny strip where the bond wires attach still working. Need a no-touch method.
Interesting. In my defense, a google search lists thousands for credible documents referring to a coating that includes phosphorus to convert the blue light to white. Sites like Phillips, Osram, etc. talk about a phosphorus coating.
They are wrong! Start with cerium doped yittrium-aluminum-garnet… maybe toss in a little erbium. Go quite a bit more exotic for warmer colors and high-CRI.
That’s the fun thing about language.
At some point back in time, someone decided that ‘phosphor’ would make a nice collective term for all substances with luminescating probabilities. Without containing any elemental phosphor, of course.
It’s the same mess in my language.
i also kind of hope he does it, but with a realistic realization of the likelihood of success. He is basically donating money to research, and if if succeeds then his investment paid off (i think of it as a kind of lottery)
I believe the phosfor recipes of the different manufacturers are highly secreted, so either that is because it is something special that costed them a lot of effort to develope, or it is just dried salad dressing and they don't want us to know :-D
I thought somebody here finally got a working de-dome after several failures and came to the conclusion it didn't improve throw, and also made the beam pattern all funky? I know I remember seeing pictures of mutilated MTG2s, just don't remember who it was...
I successfully dedomed my one and only MGT2. It improved throw tremendously. It was a reluctant dedome after I accidentally busted the dome. You can see a picture of it in my second Defiant Spotlight mod thread. It’s not pretty. I didn’t try to get every bit of silicone off. I used heat, but not the heat of the led itself. I believe that it can be done successfully that way, but at high risk.
If you want to recover the emitter for mule use, you could use an external phosphor from an LED bulb. Look for the ones that have a yellow bulb surface on the outside. They have the phosphor embedded in that plastic. Might be useable for something.
I’m confused now. On one of the threads about dedoming MT-G2, a lot of folks said that it’s easy to dedome the MT-G2, just grab, twist, and pull, or just grab and twist?
