any intel on fever thermometers?

Of course, in the middle of all this Coronavirus mess, I don’t have a thermometer, and these are pretty much sold out in most retail stores here in the US.

Not that it will likely get here in any time to do me any good, but Gearbest and the other usual suspects are selling these “non contact” infra-red “gun style” thermometers. I had never priced these before so I can’t be sure if they are price gouging or not.

The New York times suggests they are worthless:

Is there anyone who tests these things, like they test lights, batteries, and chargers?

Short of buying a high-end hospital grade thermometer like a Welch-Allyn CareTemp for $250+ USD, what’s a good, reliable and reasonably accurate thermometer for home use?

I ordered an oral electric from Amazone, delivery was extended to 6 weeks so I cancelled the order.
Amazone did cancel but 10 weeks later it arrives in my mailbox crushed, DOA.

I have no suggestions.
If anyone locates old school mercury/glass thermometers please post it up.

BTW, if the nasal burning itch is caught early ZiCam works a treat on short circuiting colds/flu. Not sure about #19 but I have 4 - .5oz here to be used.

Pre pandemic you could have got one in the US at harbor freight for under $30. Big box stores $50 to $100 depending on features and brand. These are with the red laser? aiming light. They are useful for industrial and heating and cooling & automotive. Measuring on the forehead is not a good way to do with things but you can still sort of get a rough idea of potential issues. Opening the mouth and getting a temperature of the back of the throat or roof of the mouth is more consistent unless you just drank something cold or hot or your a mouth breather. Edit the reading at the roof of the mouth or the back of the throat is still going to be lower than your true body temperature but once you have a baseline and do it everyday you know where you should be. Some of them will record the highest reading so you don’t need a mirror to read the thing while it’s pointed in your mouth

Look for the Exergen TAT-2000C

We bought one years ago during one of the flu epidemics. Uses one 9v battery.

It’s the kind you place in contact with forehead then slide around to temple (then clean with alcohol and replace a clear plastic cover to put away).

It’s not the point-from-a-distance type so a bit more likely not sold out, and harder to screw up getting the proper distance for measurement.

Online prices vary enormously, and I guess there are several models now.

It looks like you can find them in the US at Tractor Supply, possibly still at harbor freight and some auto parts stores. Just search for “infrared thermometer”. Anywhere from 15 to $30. If the red laser light scares you, you can easily cover it.

Oral electric??

Thanks for the heads-up pointer to the NYT info:

A button battery. My order cost <$15.
They can be oral, under arm or anal. Under arm is –1 degree, anal is +1 degree f.
My hope is we all get what we want, not what we deserve.

Looking online for awhile it seems all are out of stock.
Amazone from China is atleast 6 weeks out.

Hmm, 96.8°F. Guess that means I’m running cool.

I recall getting 2 from GB at 8bux a pop, 18bux for both with shipping.

Now? Pffft. Expect to get raped no matter where you get ’em from.

Oh, hey, same donk, 17bux, shipping extra. Not bad.

I use mine around the car, etc. Works fine.

Then again, considering shipping times nowadays, the plague would likely be over by the time anyone’d get ’em.

I use one of the infrared types on my car, but it reads pretty low and a little inconsistent on me.

For whatever it’s worth, Wyze (Seattle) are reselling iHealth thermometers for $53…

It is true. Resolution is not ideal for taking human temperature.

Remember, if you’re using one of those infrared thermometers on a shiny surface, put some matt masking tape on it.

The key word is “emissivity”

ir can be used to measure body temp, but… there is a big but, measure from 1\2-1 inch away, make sure forehead is dry, expect it to read low, so have medical grade thermometer to see how low, then you can add, that number to readings, we do that at work with fluke ir thermometers, they are very consistent if you keep them really close to forehead, but they read 1c lower, so we just add 1 degree to reading,

I bought the Xiamoi MMC-W201 model. Seems to work great. So probably the W505 is good too https://www.gearbest.com/monitoring—-testing/pp_3001531257903002.html?wid=2000001

Remember the only way to get accurate fever measure is to put it in the a. It is not good enough to use the ears, mouth or arm pits.

Hospitals around here use something of this style.

As for the infrared gun-style things, $15 used to be the sweet spot unless you want name-brand, warranty, and/or extra features.

the infrared ones are not accurate enough for many reasons

one big one is, the skin temperature on the forehead will vary a LOT with ambient air temperature

a $200 one might compensate for that, and have some correction for human body temp, a $30 one will not
also the cheap ones may not even read tenths of a degree

if you just want to measure your own temp, get one that goes in your mouth, plus they are like $5
