I’m looking at the Monoprice Maker Select Plus and wanted to know what ya’ll thought of it or any other 3D printers.

So on the local classifieds website someone had a 3D printer for sale. Wasn’t such a good deal, but I did a couple hours of research and I found the Monoprice Maker Select+. Seems decent for the price. The printer I looked at earlier (FLSun kit) had a print bed of 300x300, the MP is 200x200.

Not looking for speed, but a good print resolution would be nice. I don’t expect to print huge things often, and maybe a flashlight handle or two is what I’d like to make at first. My daughter would want to make badges and craft stuff.

I know there are a few guys around here that have 3D printers below Is one of the threads I am also interested in 3D printing and ordered a Prusa MK3 on 2/10/18 but haven’t received it yet so I am of no help other then after doing my research it seemed like the best bang for the buck, I think it is going to be something that if you like tinker and try different things you can get some high quality prints. hopefully I should have mine in a couple weeks

So I just bit the bullet and bought a Prusa i3 MK3. This 3D printer will be capable of printing excellent quality parts with just about any filament type known. That includes flexible filament, carbon fiber infused filament and even wood and metal infused filament. I look forward to making flashlight parts out of Nylon X (20% carbon fiber infused nylon) and experimenting with practical uses of all of the other filament types. I’m not sure if I’m going to offer a printing/design service for this …

It’s a great printer - almost all i3-based printers work well - but it doesn’t have auto leveling. You can get a separate sensor that serves as the Z endstop for around $20 but it’s not a perfect solution. Make sure the sensor you buy is compatible.

I’ve had my Monoprice Select Mini v1 since Sep’16, it was the go to $200 starter printer then.

Right now I’d skip the Mini or Maker Select Plus and go right to the Creality CR-10 a 300mm x 300mm x 400mm printer @ banggood US warehouse for $359.99. EDIT: Forgot the Banggood link.

It’s one the most popular printers currently with a good community making parts to upgrade and fix any problems.

The one thing most printer owners want is a bigger build volume. I sometimes see something that I’d want to print that is just too big for my small printer.

Most of the stuff I’ve printed is parts I’ve designed in TinkerCAD to fix something or make it do what I want it to do.

The CHEP Filament Friday Youtube channel is a great place to learn how to use TinkerCAD.

I was thinking of the MP Maker Select Plus as it’s $300 after coupon SELPLUS. Much better deal than at $400.

So what about the CR-10 vs 10S? And any thoughts on the Ender-3? That one is $200, and while it’s 220x220, it seems to be large enough for a beginning 3D printer.

I was looking last night at the Anet E12, but I can’t find anywhere that sells it that has decent/free shipping costs.

Heck, I was even contemplating a DIY Prusa i3 MK2…

edit - oh yeah, I remembered a few issues with the Creality printers: 1) single support rail for the bed, 2) only 1 Z motor, 3) non-direct drive printhead. I don’t know how much of a problem these issues are, but folks have voiced concerns on other forums.

CR-10 vs 10S?

Is 100mm more X and Y worth the ~~$100~~ $400+ more of the S?

Or the $150+ of now other S model with the same print volume of the regular CR-10. Screw-Rod-Motor-p-1192297.html

Who does that? Two models with the same name but different features and a huge price difference

1) Doesn’t seem to be an issue.
2) Same as number one. Also with two they need to be synchronized.
3) A “Bowden tube” extruder is just as reliable and you have less weight on X axis to cause problems. The Prusa uses a Bowden tube extruder.

Very new printer, looks good for the price. Haven’t seen a channel I trust do a review yet.

Why? It would be more expensive and time consuming then a even a cheap i3 style printer with about the same results or less.

I just watched the whole video, good info. Answered my question why Anet would disable safety checks in firmware - substandard components tripping false positives too often. Very bad call IMO.

The DIY would be much cheaper than a decent i3, but the time component would be signficant. Not cheaper than an Anet A8, but that’s a no-go. The problem for me would be needing a buddy who can print out all the required parts. Might be something to look into for a second printer —- I will probably skip DIY for my first.

I definitely have some thinking to do.

If those are the options, I’d go with the new Ender-3. Bigger print volume then a standard i3 clone for a $100 less.

Now I that I know about the $200 Ender-3, I might have to raid my bigger 3dprinter fund.

Apparently the Creality CR-10S was on sale for $377 just a short while ago at Light in the Box.
The difference between the 10 and 10S (when both are 300x300x400) is the 10S has dual Z motors, feed sensor, and a better brainbox with (supposedly) unlocked bootloader.

edit - apparently there’s the Tevo Tornado for $326 from Banggood’s US warehouse, but it’s FedEx shipping, so I don’t think it will ship to an APO address.

Skip the Tevo, this Ender-3 is looking real nice.

It has the filament out sensor and the resume feature.

Stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany. Complicates things when ordering from China and even the US sometimes. Direct shipping is a no-go as Europe taxes stuff fairly stiffly. >_<
But that link you gave shows them shipping from Poland, in stock, and it says, “Seller Shipping Method - $0 USD” with a cost of $199. If that’s true, that would be a huge bargain IMO.

It shows the same to ship to me here in FL and for the APO address I googled in Afghanistan.

If/when I get one it would double my print volume from around 100-110mm-ish cubed.

I might actually have to wait until I get back to the States - 3D printers are just too expensive, and I can’t wait 1-2 months for China shipping right now.

Oh yeah, there’s this one here on Amazon.de . It’s almost $350, which isn’t bad for a 3D printer from Amazon.de that goes for $309 on Amazon US. And Amazon’s one of the few sellers I trust to deliver something when they say they will most of the time.

Nope, skip the deltas until you have some idea what you want/need to print.

They are nice, but unless you have a good one they can be very hard to troubleshoot.

Also, don’t spend $1k on an imported delta printer.

Get one from SeeMeCNC.

No, get the Ender-3 for $200, so when you do get a delta you’ll have two printers.

Honestly, I’ve learned so much with my little $200 printer, that starting with a bigger one I wouldn’t have. Also it is easier to work on a small one.

I probably will wind up getting the Ender 3. The downside is that I’ll likely have to wait as it seems it’s on pre-order everywhere, and it won’t do me much good if I don’t get it before I move.

Yea, it’s very new but from a decent company.

It looks like maybe 2-3 weeks for shipping to start. Banggood has April 30 and 3dprintersonlinestore.com is saying 20 days.

The Banggood price is good til April 30 and 3dprintersonlinestore.com’s “ends” in less then 5 days.

So if you aren’t leaving before the end of next month, maybe get the one nearest you.

If you are and headed back to the CONUS maybe wait until near April 30 and pay the extra shipping charge.

Also the “regular price” of $225 at 3dprintersonlinestore.com doesn’t seem so bad if you have to wait.

For me, making 3D printed signs would be very useful. Military folks move a lot and signs like that make for great going-away gifts. I might not ever get something that large, but it’s a thought.

Well, FWIW I just pulled the trigger on a Creality Ender 3.

Amazon US had them in stock for $229. I could have ordered from BG/China for $199, but Amazon’s reliability in shipping to APO was worth the extra $30, plus it will get here much faster.

I was just about to buy a Tevo Tornado, but then Amazon got the Ender 3 in stock. With it being ~$100 cheaper, I decided to go with the cheaper/smaller printer for my first 3D printer. And from all the reviews I’ve seen it is a pretty good printer.

Only thing to decide now is what filament to get! I’m probably going to get a couple $18 spools of PLA to start off with. I don’t need anything fancy at this stage.
