Anyone ever change the LED in their Roche F12?

I received one recently from Fasttech and the LED was not attached to the heatsink properly. After removing the LED, what I saw was CONCERNING.
Sorry for the crappy picture.

The small circle/hole in the middle I assume is from the lathe but is a sign of bad machiening. Even my lower quality N-light HB-50 did NOT have this tool mark. Besides the hole, what was worse was that the surface did NOT feel FLAT. It in fact felt slightly dome shaped and I assume this is why the LED did not remain in place. (Thermal paste was used and not thermal epoxy). I tried removing the driver to get free access to the surface to some how flatten it but, could not get the driver out (and broke a 7135 chip in the process) so had to ratch something with the dremel. The work is horrible (because I didn’t want to damage the output wires) but it’s sufficiently flat now.

Ok. thruhfully, I was feeling a little manic after too much coffee and didn’t have any patience at all. :frowning:

Have anyone here remove the LED star from any of their Roche F12s (specify where you bought it please) and seen what’s underneath?

The first Roche I bought was from int-outdoor and there are some differences between these two. 1) intl-outdoor : ‘O’ ring around bezel, fasttech: No ’O’ring. 2) intl-outdoor: Plain window, fasttech: AR coated window. 3) Switches feel different 4) Different lanyards.

Thanks for your inputs.

bump?

anyone?

1. Put thread into the modding section. (You can edit your 1. post and fix that)
2. Patience is a virtue.

Patience is a virtue? lol. Did you see when I made the first post? 0:) (Forum changed. Thanks.)

The F12 is by far the most appealing 18650 tube light IMO and I was going to order one today. Fingers crossed that it was an anomaly.

Check out the pic from IOS which was one of first places to sell F12s. How else does yours differ (other than having anodizing under the LED board)?

Bare aluminum under the LED star/PCB

Centering ring that threads down onto the star

Whoops… Sorry about that!
:zipper_mouth_face:

Slim, Thanks. That was real cool picking up the bare aluminum under the star in the IO lights (good thing). I didn’t even compare mine… The star of the Fasttech light had a simple ‘butterfly’ spacer to keep the reflector away from the LEDs contacts.

Race: No need to apologise man
