You should note that G715 is a smaller knife. However, searching for an axis lock and serrated blade there are not too many choises out there. Give up the lock specification and you get a lot of models to choose from.
I have G701 (no black one yet though, perhaps my black one arrives tomorrow). It is quite different from 710. The handle is rather smooth metal whereas 710 has a very rough surface. If you like grippy handles 701 is definately not for you. It feels lighter than 710 and the handle feels quite a bit smaller. The blade shape is quite different as well of couse.
My 701 is very smooth and opens easily with thumb or a flick with the lock released. No play to notice. Quality seems typical Ganzo quality that is more or less similar on all my Ganzos (except my 704 that has a rough lock).
[Edit: After getting couple black G701s I’m qualified to talk about them too!]
Black finish on blade is good and even. Time will tell if it stays this was or just wears out and starts looking very ugly. (Worn metal color looks definately much better than worn black).
The black ones are of equal quality to my metal colored ones. A drop of lube to make it smoother, a few flicks to distribute it and it’s ready to go. Reasonably sharp too and it has a flat ground. One of the black ones has the tiny bit of vertical play that I’m unable to see but can feel if I use force on the blade.
One disadvantage I forgot to mention: the spring does not assist too much in closing the lock, if it is almost open. In some knifes the axis lock finishes the last degrees and it is enough to get it almost open. I’d estimate you G701 gives help on only the last 5-10 degrees or so.
thanks hoffig, after reading your post, the g701 would be a knife that i would have wanted. i prefer the smoother handle. the handle on 710 it waaay too grippy. too hard to take out and put knife in my jeans. i wish i didnt get the g10 handle.
but now that i seen the new g715, i dont really want this 701 anymore. haha
If the problem is too much grip with G710, you might consider 704 as well. It is much less grippy (and not as roughly shaped) than 710. I’d say it is about as grippy as Enlan EL01. I think 704 is more compactly shaped than 710 too. 701/702 are good choises for knifes with smooth handle but they are not something you’d like to handle eg. with wet hands or in a snowy environment.
I must say that while I keep complaining about the tiny grittyness of the lock on my G704 it is nothing compared to my Enlan EL02s or 04s. They definately need some smoothing to be convinient in use. (Those probably would smooth out a lot in daily use. My pieces are in a collection and are handled only very occationally.)
For smaller knifes some good choises (in axes lock category) might be SRM 763 or 6261 as well (if one wants a smooth blade).
sounds like you got quite the collection there hoffig. that 704’s handle is a bit too plain looking for me, and im skeptical about the grittyness you said on the lock. so i will pass.
those srm’s looks very cool, but a tad too small for me. if the blades were just under 3 inches then yes, but at 2.5, kinda tiny.
and i dont even wanna look at the enlans if they are even more gritty hahah.
i did notice the g710 also come with another handle. a mercata type…it looks smoother and has a cool color scheme. you seen it?
and what, i didnt notice that g715 without a clip….thats a deal breaker for me as well speedsix
My collection includes about 100 chinese folding knives, mostly Enlan/SRM/Ganzo. I guess I should take some pictures about it some day
I think 704 is plain but feels like a tool. I must emphasize that the grittyness on my sample is very minor, nothing like my Enlan axes locks. I’m sure a bit of polishing or actual use would make all of them very good in no time… (My collection is unmodified original condition only. Not polished, not sharpened, not played too much to avoid wear. )
I’d have no trouble recommending G704 as a good knife. Also my opinion is based on a single sample. I’m a bit temped to get another one for the EDC pool I have, it is that good. (I keep a separate pool for the knifes that I actually use.)
If you need a fancy knife to show off, you probably pick something else like Ganzo G712 or Enlan L01MCT (that looks actually much better in real life than on those pictures, with a smooth but shaped handle).
I’ve not seen G710 in other handle types than very textured G10. I guess I must look around a bit, because my collection is missing a different handle if it exists With a different type of handle I might like that knife a lot more perhaps. (For example some Enlans feel very different with a different handle).
I think at the price they’re asking for the chinese knifes, most of they are good enough for the money (on good brands). After handling all my knives I think the most important matters are preferences and how it feels in ones hand. There is nothing else but trying out that lets you know how it feels in your hand.
I really must stop clicking on knife threads, it’s so upsetting seeing whats available that I cant carry I just have a couple of srm’s and an enlan em/n01 (not sure if its en or em, its damm small) the enlan I really shouldn’t carry tbh but its a very useful knife.
Sadly, I’m stuck with sub 75mm blade slip joint only for edc, its really annoying tbh
thats it. the ganzo g710 with the other handle ive seen that was not the g10 looked liked that benchmade rift’s handle.
ganzo called it the mircata handle.
the place where i bought my g710 carried them but i cant remember where i purchased the knife…sucks because now i want to buy the g710 with the mercata handle.
That is a pretty knife that feels good in hand too. Enlan EL04 (Micarta) has tiny texture on the surface that makes you get a good grip. Much rounder form than the G10 version of that knife. The Benchmade is very good looking, but out of the price range I limit my collection.
Micarta can also be smooth as well and rather simple looking like on EL02 micarta version. (I find that a bit too smooth already). The surface treatment and color selection/layering can make two micartas very different.
so that amazon link is called the enlan el04? if so, do you have one? whats your thoughts on it? axis lock gritty, smooth operation, any blade movement…etc.
Not sure the G710 was ever made with Micarta handle. The sources I use carry them only with G10 handle…Ganzo G710 w/G10 handle similar to and often confused to Micarta…someone correct me if I am wrong.
darn, now i really wish i have bought that g710 in mircata. seems like a very rare item now. prolly discountinued. im sure i saw it. it gave me the option, and ive seen pics on forums.
