He’d discovered a sign error in his arithmetic. The big one happens and everything east of the fault falls into the Atlantic Ocean ….

There's a sci-fi story where an apocalypse is kicked off partly by the dam at Success Lake breaking somehow.

I used to live pretty close to Success Lake.

By the way, the lake is not as great as it sounds.

If an earthquake of even the smaller 6.2 magnitude had hit on the Ramapo fault in New Jersey, it would have been devastating. Not that far from the truth

I felt it in Las Vegas. Thought I had a dizzy moment but then I noticed EVERYTHING in the store I was in was swaying, all the stuff on the wall, all the stuff hanging from the ceiling. Coming from AZ, my brain didn't know what to make of it.

Good advice … I think harbor freight has some really good ones .make sure and stock up on AAA heavy duty batteries too !

Don’t forget to buy that $4 angle grinder you’ve been saving up for too.

I wouldn’t be surprised if many (most?) people feel that they don’t need a flashlight since they can just use their phone’s flashlight app.

Do you guys also have local strength measurements?

I'm wondering this since I'm curious what the magnitude was at the place where you, guys felt it. Since you talk about a 6.x. But in reality you probably only felt a 1 or 2.

This one for example had a magnitude of 5.8, but as you can see people actually only felt it as a magnitude 1 or 2 locally.

I ran across this old Los Angeles Times news story (4 May 2016), it seems to indicate “The Big One” could really be bad due to the fact that not much has been going on for over 100 years & a bunch of potential energy is being stored up. .

What say you guys that actually live around there??

Yeah, if the stars lined up just right and the San Andreas fault, Yellowstone, & Yosemite all went off at about the same time just about everything West of the Mississippi River & North of most of Texas & some of Arizona would be in a world of immediate hurt.

East of the Mississippi would be to when Volcanic Winter rolled in. .

Our elevation is about 1000 feet, so if the seas rise we'll be okay for a while.

A big earthquake, though, and we're in real trouble, even with earthquake insurance.

Inhabitants of the East-Coast of the US will be confronted by slow rising water (global warming).
Unless the Las Palmas landslide causes a mega tsunami ahead of schedule (about 10,000yr).
