New crack in Steamer Lane cliff, Santa Cruz California, since July 4, 2019
it has been getting wider by about 6” each day for the last 3 days…

Local Color
Okay, that’s… random. (Wtf?)

Of course if this quake had hit LA instead of Ridgequest the damage would have been much greater because there is more “stuff” but there have been ‘approx’ 25 stronger recorded in the U.S.
I think most people accept ‘the big one’ will be 8.0 or greater
If I remember correctly an 8.0 is 10x stronger than a 7.0, but releases 30x the energy. Something like that anyway.

Thank you for the pictures of the crack in the Steamer Lane Cliff. Wow….
How long before it shears off do ’you’ think it will be??
Loved the “Local Color” video too….
Maybe she’s on crack, who knows…
that video was what was happening at the location where I took the photos of the crack
an example of the “atmosphere” there
she has been living in the parking lot, since before the quake
and calls people out regularly

I get it now, ’nuf said.
Was the red ribbon put up after the crack developed? I like how the bottom picture shows the ocean through the crack.
Same sort of thing happens here in SB on the bluffs regularly. Not daily, generally during big swells. Haven’t heard of that happening coincident with a very far away earthquake.
yes the ribbon was placed to prevent people from stepping over the crack, after it appeared
there were no large swells, it has been hot, sometimes with no wind. I called it “earthquake weather” a couple days prior to the earthquake that coincided with the crack appearing on the cliff.
The quake in Ridgecrest was 360 miles away from Santa Cruz. I agree that seems far
and though Santa Cruz is on the San Andreas Fault, Ridgecrest is not.
Felt it decently from Temecula CA.

I recall a science fiction story in which a California geologist working on earthquake prediction suddenly bolts from his desk and runs across the parking lot.
He’d discovered a sign error in his arithmetic. The big one happens and everything east of the fault falls into the Atlantic Ocean ….

Sounds like wishful thinking by somebody ‘WEST of the fault’. .
There's a sci-fi story where an apocalypse is kicked off partly by the dam at Success Lake breaking somehow.
I used to live pretty close to Success Lake.
By the way, the lake is not as great as it sounds.
EDIT:
The book is Lucifer's Hammer.
If an earthquake of even the smaller 6.2 magnitude had hit on the Ramapo fault in New Jersey, it would have been devastating. Not that far from the truth
I felt it in Las Vegas. Thought I had a dizzy moment but then I noticed EVERYTHING in the store I was in was swaying, all the stuff on the wall, all the stuff hanging from the ceiling. Coming from AZ, my brain didn't know what to make of it.

LOL Gotta love the locals… They are why Pacific Ave and occasionally the wharf are so awesome.

Do you guys also have local strength measurements?
I'm wondering this since I'm curious what the magnitude was at the place where you, guys felt it. Since you talk about a 6.x. But in reality you probably only felt a 1 or 2.
Something like this: https://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/20190709113928395-09203438.html
This one for example had a magnitude of 5.8, but as you can see people actually only felt it as a magnitude 1 or 2 locally.

I ran across this old Los Angeles Times news story (4 May 2016), it seems to indicate “The Big One” could really be bad due to the fact that not much has been going on for over 100 years & a bunch of potential energy is being stored up.
.
What say you guys that actually live around there??
