I was advised to take Magnesium glycinate to help with insomnia.
Finding a good Magnesium glycinate supplement is pretty difficult.
Most sellers are deceptive or outright lie, and figuring out which type of Magnesium glycinate is best is another hurdle.
I guess that’s true with many supplements, but I’ve never had so much trouble finding other supplements that I thought were good.
(Supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA in the U.S., so I find myself reading more customer reviews than usual for supplements.)
I don’t want to link to what I decided upon because I’m not very confident in my choice partly because it only has about 100 customer reviews, which isn’t nearly as many as I would prefer.
Anyway, I should receive the Magnesium glycinate tomorrow so we’ll see if it helps or not.
If it seems to help me, then I guess I will provide the link (in due time.)
Have You tried melatonin?
Yes, I take melatonin and a couple of psych meds that help with insomnia.
I also briskly walk for 20 minutes per day.
Yes, I take Magnesium Threonate, Aipgenin and theanine for insomnia.
Works amazing, no drowsiness, just keeps my mind from racing.
I have heard about this method and it’s effectiveness, but haven’t tried it myself. Thing is -it takes time to master it and show effects. There was also one method with breath control, but I can’t find info on it.
I didn’t know about Magnesium threonate, or the other things you mentioned.
As it turns out, Magnesium threonate is another type of Magnesium for insomnia.
Sweet!
Took a quick look, this is just basic mediation technique but yeah, it works esp. if you are tired already.
Its intention is to make you meditate in a relaxed state, though.
I find things that do work, Don’t continue to work— your body acclimates quickly
I shuffle between CBD oil , melatonin and Magnesium — melatonin with cbd oil works the best – I do that once a week — nothing beats a hard days work and being tired
Also sleep comes in waves — If you stay up past your cycle – It makes for a bad sleep cycle
I wear a Fitbit – It’s amazing what goes on when you sleep or don’t sleep – Too many Dreams
Some pot gummies will make you sleep.
I just perform kelnorim until I fall asleep.
I see an Andrew Huberman follower here :D.
As for the topic itself, I did try Magnesium Glycinate (from bulk.com) for about two months but it didn’t impact my sleep. However I don’t have big problems falling asleep, just hoped it would improve the quality.
Adding L-Theanine helped, but mostly when I was overcaffeinated, so in the end I settled on not drinking coffee after 3 PM, much more effective ^^.
I also tried Innositol, but that also didn’t help with sleep quality much.
In general, melatonin puts you out, niacin keeps you out.
I “fought” the initial sandman effect of melatonin, and couldn’t get to sleep after. So when something was really f’ing with my ability to go to sleep (eg, in a hotel room), melatonin and niacin worked wonders.
Our reactions and the Effectiveness of drugs or supplements can be different for each individual. I don’t like drugs but I found one that works. I don’t get any side effects from it except for 5 to 10 minutes maximum of drowsiness When I Wake up. No headache nothing else.
It’s a prescription drug called Temazepam/ Restoril.
It can be very challenging finding the right one. I tried many before I found this one. I don’t need it every night maybe 3 or 4 times a month.
I tried all those natural ones and they did nothing for me I can’t remember their names. Melatonin was one of them . I think serotonin is another one.?
Good Luck
Sleep has been an issue for me a few times, I’ve found lots of useful information on the Matthew Walker podcast.
The Matt Walker Podcast (sleepdiplomat.com)
I take it now and then. Definitely works for me. Not as strong as melatonin, but you don’t feel crappy if you can’t fall asleep after you take it. You could take it anytime in the day if you wanted to.
That L-theanine stuff is legit too. Felt like Xanax the first time I took it. But the ones I bought came in coconut oil capsules that taste like sunscreen so I stopped taking them lol
I tried two different brands of Magnesium glycinate.
This one (tnvitamins Chelated Magnesium Glycinate) is okay, but it has much less of the active ingredient than is advertised:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B4PRL1SK
This one (Amazon Elements Chelated Magnesium Glycinate) is great, and is super cheap, but the pills are quite large.
If you have trouble with large pills, then skip this one.
Otherwise, it’s an amazing deal:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BFR18K5
Both of these supplements help me sleep better, though the second one is a much better deal.
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll try out Magnesium Glycinate and the L-theanine. Maybe switching them up could prevent tolerance. I’ll look into meditation. What I’m doing now is not working.
I’ve tried different multiblend formulas like zzquil triple action in gummy form. The devil is in the details. Those gummy forms are full of dirty ingredients and it’s high calorie, high sugar. barely worked for me. and another brand that has magnesium critate, melonin, gabba, ashwaganda. placebo city. The melotonin for sure has some effect to help get me to fall asleep around 10pm 11pm but I still wake way to early and see the clock at 2am - 3am. If I don’t take anything I get similar results. I’ve used doxylamine and helps a bit at first but taking it in the long term is horrible stuff for you. I used to get excellent restful sleep without needing aid but that seem to be long gone.
Within 15 minutes of waking you should try for a ~20 min walk outside. Do it again midday.
In fact, according to recent research, a lack of sunlight during the day is even worse than the presence of light at night.
As far Mg Glycinate, I liked Doctor’s Best because they used Albion Chelates which you will find in high quality mineral supplements. I would not buy Amazon supplements.
There is nothing special about Mg glycinate though … in your intestines it just breaks down in Mg and Glycine. So I just take 3g glycine before bed instead. During the day I use Mg Malate (NOW).
My Sleep Stack:
- Melatonin (sustained release, and sublingual, always, been going on for 20+ years)
- Mg Threonate (NOW, $24 Amazon)
- Lithium Orotate 5mg (KAL)
- Glycine 3g (NOW, 1 lb bottle)
- NAC 1g (you may not want to do this, but I put it next to NAC becuase GlyNac is a thing)
- Taurine 1g
Stuff I may add before bed depending on if I’m stressed out or not. I rarely use them. Sometimes I rotate them daily:
- Theanine (can probably be used every day)
- GABA (NOW, 750mg … maybe effective once or twice a week)
- Apigenin (DONOTAGE.COM, can also be used every day)
When adding supplements, only make one change at a time. If it doesn’t work, remove it, leave a a week for washout period.
How many meds do you take a day?? i would speak to a pharmacist, at very least, cuz it may affect how other meds you take work, and other meds you take may affect how this supplement works.
I’m guessing that you’re talking to runswithsnakes, but I’ll answer the question for myself.
I take five prescription medications and a bunch of supplements.
I tell my doctors everything that I take so hopefully I don’t have a bad reaction of meds.
