Aston Martin 18650 cells

Aston Martin issued a press release updating their Rapide E car.

This bit caught my attention:

Rapide E will be powered by an 800V battery electrical architecture with 65kWh installed capacity using over 5600 lithium ion 18650 format cylindrical cells.

65,000 / 5,600 = 11.6 Wh per cell.

I wonder what cells they are using.

So divide 11.6 Wh by 3.6 (volt) and you get 3,224 mAh per cell.
The cells are probably a well known brand, but specially manufactured to A-M specs.

800 is a lot of batteries in series (twice Tesla layout). The math leads to 224S25P or something like that.

So, 2C discharge, would be 130KW, or 173Hp and a runtime of 30m.

They are claiming ~610HP and a top speed of 155Mph, which would require ~7C, for a runtime of ~8.5m at top speed :). Enough time to cover 22M.

Interesting that they (and their pack-manufacturing partner) are using 18650s at this late date. I’d guess they want to keep their options open WRT sources of cells.

I’d say that they are a 10A capable cell. So about 3C max.

That 7C peak is probably done using active cooling, and only for 1 minute at max power.

Also helps that they are using 18650s. That must help quite a bit with cost, along with surface area in regards to heat dissipation.
