AVR Emulators for Dummies (?)

I do not have an interest (yet) in programming the AT tiny13a but I would like to see if I can develop a series of modes that would be useful.

Way back when, I learned how to program basic and other database like programs but never played with the more recent coding languages.

I was wondering if anyone has found a good AVR simulator/emulator that a novice could pick up and take a stab at programming the tiny13a for flashlights. There are a few offerings out there but I would really like to hear from the experts here.

+1

Edit: I’m thinking something that can show a C program as a flow chart maybe or simplifies functions into big chunks that can easily be understood at a glance. I’m a beginner with programming (this forum got me started with microcontrollers) and while I can eventually work out what small parts of the code do, by then I’ve forgotten what the rest of the code does and what course it takes!
