Battery options for Cold Weather, and options w USB-C for AA/14500 Zebras, 18650 Zebras, and Skilhunt H300

Im recently on a deep dive down the Battery rabbit hole, for AA/14500 Zebras, 18650 Zebras, and the Skilhunt H300, here is some of my recent learning

AA/14500 Zebras:
all batteries w USB ports are Protected Button Tops

14500 Button Top batteries w USB ports are the same length as Unprotected Button Tops

Only Button Tops fit in an AA/14500 Zebra

Flat Top 14500 are always Unprotected and do not work in a Zebra

AA Zebras dont have LVP for LiIon, so Protected Button Tops are safest, and USB makes them very convenient.

The Lumintop 14500 w USB-C Protected Button Tops have been working well for me in my Zebras (also in my D3AA and TS10).

AA Zebras battery check is unreliable w LiIon, they can read 1 blink when actually over 50% full.

18650 Zebras:
18650 batteries w USB ports are 70mm long, and they are always Protected Button Tops, that are 5mm Longer than Unprotected Flat Tops and do not fit in a Zebra

18650 Zebras Do have LVP and Only Unprotected Flat Tops will fit. They are 65mm long.

Skilhunt H300:
The Skilhunt H300 uses Protected 18650 Button Tops, that are longer than Unprotected Flat Tops

Unprotected Flat tops in the Skilhunt H300 will lose contact if the tail is bumped, because the battery is 4mm shorter than the Protected Button Top Skilhunt sells.

for a Skilhunt H300, there is a Cold Rated protected Button Top sold by LiIon wholesale. This is the battery I would buy if Cold Weather performance was a priority.

They also sell an 18650 Protected Button Top w USB-C, which is the battery I would buy to eliminate the need for the magnetic charging cable.

One important thing to keep in mind:
Some of the newer AA zebralights are not li-ion compatible anymore. You will need to use NiMH, voltage-converted li-ion or lithium primary cells for those, as they changed the boost driver.

Re Zebras w 519a LEDs, Only 53 series drivers from early 2023 are AA/LiIon capable. Like this one I have:

Around October 2023 the 53 series Hosts received the new driver that is AA only, subsequently sold in the 54 series.

The 2024 53 model, also uses a driver that is AA only. (mcbob has mentioned Zebralight started using the driver for the 54 series, in some remaining 53 marked Hosts)

and All Hosts marked 54, are AA only. I believe they started shipping after Zebralight cleared all inventory of hosts marked 53. All 2025 hosts are marked 54, and are AA only.

Yeh, 14500s with built-in charging are actually 14430s with the board+button making up the other 7mm or so, so expect less capacity.

I’m always burning down the cell in my TS10 and having to recharge it, so I’ll take the (marginal) extra oomf from a real 14500. In my GTmicro, which I use less frequently, I got one of those 14430s in there, and in a pinch, can just top off with a cable vs arsing around with a separate charger.


I’m wondering if just using the cells in cold temps would warm 'em up enough internally to let them Just Work, vs needing special cells. Ain’t like speeding off in a Tesla in subzero temps or anything…
