I have to rethink this whole li ion thing now. I had always gone with the view they dont hold charge long, like mobile phones, or laptops, if left switched off, but fully charged, within months, they will be flat or at least Im fairly sure thats been my experience. Not that Im in the habit of leaving phones for months but I have done so with the old phone that I keep as a spare and Ive needed to recharge them before use. And Im certain I charged them before putting them away.

The problem with phones, laptops and a lot of other stuff is that the switch does not disconnect the battery. It is a soft off mode that still draws a small current.
A unprotected LiIon taken out of equipment does not have any current draw and a protected only has a very low draw that takes many years to empty a 18650 cell.
I wonder if putting foam non-adhesive pipe insulation on the handle would insulate the battery(ies) enough for efficient operation in actual cold. That is, if the operation of the light would heat the insulated handle enough to keep the battery warm?
Anybody ever try it? The insulation would also prevent the aluminum from sucking heat out of the hands.
It’s easy enough to test, but it’s not cold outdoors right now.
CR123 remain the best option for low temp.
