Best EDC 1AA? Want clip, tailstanding, and low low

Hello you flashoholic wizards,

I’m looking for a replacement for my current EDC, a Hugsby P31, which I love, and would pretty much be a perfect light if it had a moonlight mode.

Where can I go to get the same quality anodization, good clip, AA form factor but with my moonlight mode?

Am i asking too much and letting the perfect be the enemy of the good?

Thanks much in advance,
Ross

http://www.sbflashlights.com/L3-Illumination/L3-Illumination-L10-Colors-Cree-XPG2-p278.html $19.99

http://www.sbflashlights.com/L3-Illumination/Pocket-clip-for-L10-flashlight-p313.html $2.50

Four modes of output: firefly(0.09lumens 147hours) -> Low (3 lumens, 30hrs ) -> Medium (30 lumens) —> High (120 lumens, 1.5hrs)

3 mode model removes Firefly mode of .09 lumens. Low, Medium, High only

i have bought 11 of these sofar mostly 3 mode version for family and friends

or zebra sc52
you can even choose from various moonlight modes and with a 14500 it’s a pocket rocket

Reading that review of the L10, it looks like it’s talking about a High-CRI version with a Nichia? emitter? Unfamiliar with those, am i reading that incorrectly.

Man, I do LOVE my zebralight headlamp. Maybe I should just complete the set…

da25 and sc52 are the best. and quark.

best ui - quark

best build - sc52

best likability - titanium

I agree with kreisler that those are the best three AA/sub-lumen lights. I’ve run them side-by-side with a light meter and stopwatch and find the three (XML versions) to be equally efficient, despite certain marketing claims.

I personally like the QAAX (I have Pro and Tac NW versions) the best for its battery versatility, Lego-ability, durability, and manufacturer product/customer support.

This is your best choice!

You can get the L10 with xpg or high CRI nichia.

I highly recommend the nichia. If you’ve never had a high CRI (neutral) you owe it to yourself to try it. It’s a very affordable light.

Must warn you: the white finish version, while very pretty, is delicate. Definitely paint, not anodized. Also not so sure about the clip… Don’t have one, but I’ve read mixed reports.

Even with those quibbles… Still think every flashaholic type should have an L10 nichia 4 mode! But that’s just me.

If you are a fan of Neutral white tint these two:
Zebralight SC52w AA Flashlight Neutral White (Pre-Order)

EagleTac D25A Clicky Neutral White XM-L2
EagleTac D25A Specs

Have you tried any Neutral White lights? Since you didn’t specify I thought you may want to consider NW.
Once you get a NW and if decide you like it better than CW, you will want all of your lights to be NW when available as an option. When you compare them side by side you can really appreciate the difference.

Here’s some NW info from EagleTac: Neutral white LED gives you better color rendition and more accurate color

Both are also available in CW as well.

You didn’t specify a price range so if your looking for something more budget priced like the Hugsby you may want to look at these two lights:

Eastward YJ J09 4-mode, I had my eye on it for a while, somewhat budget priced and it has a 5% sub low and no strobes, however there are reports of people not getting the 4 mode and that the groove for the clip was mis-machined (compared to the photos) and sticks up preventing good tailstanding, not sure if that’s been corrected yet.

UltraFire UF-T20 (from kaidomain)
UltraFire UF-T20 (Directly from UltraFire, Special BLF price)
it has a side switch and variable brightness, and the tail is magnetic. It uses an electronic switch that ramps the brightness up/down but it starts out on high so it may take a few seconds to get to the lowest setting, also you have to get used to where to stop for the lowest setting, so it may be inconvienent to get to the lowest setting quickly. Also I’m not sure if the lowest setting is truly “moon” mode, it may be around 10 lumens. It’s AA but as an option it will also run on a CR123A making it much smaller. I’m planning on ordering one of these soon. Here’s a thread on it: UltraFire T20 Thread

I’m not aware of any other decent budget AA lights with moon mode, maybe someone else can recommend other budget AA lights with moon mode?

I always liked the looks of that Hugsby and had it on my want list, but it ended up getting outdated pretty quick with its Q3-WC emitter. I ended up getting a Xeno Eo3 with XM-L NW.

Also the ZL, EagleTac and UltraFire can also run on a 14500 battery, if you haven’t gotten into Li-ion’s yet that’s also worth consideration so you can stop buying batteries and enjoy a much brighter output on most lights.

Since you have the Zebralight (H51?) headlamp and love it you already know the value of their lights and the sc52 is the same price as the H51, and it has the best options for several moon modes, so if its within your price range I would just go straight for the sc52 without any hesitation.

Good luck on your search for the perfect EDC light and enjoy your time here on BLF!

Good advice beam. I didn’t realize the sc52w was out yet. Neutrals (and warms) are the best. Very addictive.

Actually Zebralight is listing it as "Pre-Order" Estimated shipping June 21, 2013.

I'll believe it when it's actually in stock. A lot of people waiting for this light.

Another vote for the sc52. If you can find a nitecore Ti clip you can swap it out for the stock one.
