I’m not getting exactly what you’re saying. Do you mean a product that one would buy (like, from RMM) that is actually a kit, but is shipped one component at a time?
I know how you all feel lol we could work it I guess. I think the driver would have to be pre-built but we coukd always offer parts to modify the driver.
Maybe throw in some extra reflectors different types and buttons so people can customize the light to how they like it maybe different bezels.
Yea shipping is the hard part.
I am just throwing out the idea
We could even have the choice of different emitters XPG XPL XML but then it becomes a bit difficult
Nah you wold receive the driver all as one piece so each component at the same time.
That would be like receiving an o-ring by its self you would get the o-rings with other parts
In my head the driver would have come as parts but in a bag as the week x component.
Various incarnations have been mentioned lately but I’m not really keen on the kit idea, I like the freedom of choosing exactly what I want and with BLF being such a friendly community I feel like if I needed help or moral support I could just start a thread or PM one of the senior modders. That’s when I start modding of course.
That’s just about my speed. Time enough to get excited, forget where I was, lose some parts, lose interest, forget why I lost interest and get excited again, repeat.
I guess it could be fun for somebody but I’ve got more than enough unfinished projects sitting around as it is now. And shipping costs would make it DOA right out of the starting gate.
An alternative might be to offer user-designed kit consisting of a single host and a selection of parts made to fit it coming from a list of options. Each member could then have a light designed to do what they want of it giving widespread appeal with nobody making something which wouldn’t work. Doing this (or the original idea) at a budget price would probably be the biggest problem to overcome. “BLF Custom” would make a great name for such enterprises.
It is a great idea, but hard to make a reality.
On the Dutch tech website I am active they post two best buy guides 1 for notebooks (in a couple of categories) and 1 for desktops (again in several categories)
The community discusses these in depth and in effect the outcome usually is very interesting. Especially for the desktops a nice sum of parts normally is chosen and sometimes a shop is offering the system for a nice price, other times one can import the parts and see where they can be bought for a good price.
It could be cool to have a discussion thread for best DIY
Zoomie
Flooder
Thrower
And every, say, (half) year a thread for those with the best combo of parts and where to get it.
Would be very cool to see how the 2016 lights compare to the 2020 ones.
Lots of sites have host only choices. List some that are widely available from different sources and do a poll on which one to try first. Have a first build contest with accessories, upgrades, or soldering supplies as prizes. Any can enter but only noobs is can win. No idea what it would take to get someone to try seeing how easy a simple assembly already is but give it a whirl.
