My needs may not be your needs. I always go with headlamps while walking in the woods, always. I need both hands free. As I am often walking with lots of weight and longer, harder hikes occasionally with no trail through the trees and bushes, I prefer the Petzl E-lite for my backup headlamp. It’s only been critical once, but it was enough to make me love it even more. They run off coin cell batterys and for what they do and the niche they fill, are an awesome product. Your headlamp (insert any other brand and model here) will kick it’s ass, except in one category: weight. Plus it works great.
That said, I must have 30-40 headlamps here or there which I have accumulated over the years, of multiple battery types and they all work good. Although I have multiples 18650/18630 versions of some: Skillhunt H03, various Nitecore, some Sofirn SP40 and D25S, I’ve noticed that I often simply grab a AA or AAA plastic headlamp. I have multiple Petzl, Black Diamond and Princeton Tec and for reliability and simplicity I like the Princeton Tec lights. They make good stuff.
I love having a powerful flashlight for camp, so I have a BLF Q8 and either Thorfire or Convoy in my vehicles.
