BLF A6 de-dome

Has anyone purposely de-domed the xpl 1A led on the BLF A6 and like the results?

Thought about it, but the XPL-HI is just too easy, so I swapped one in… It does increase the projection of the beam… I imagine a good dedome would too, but I have only been about 50% on those….

Did you make any other changes(ie lens, smooth reflector)? We’re you satisfied with the results?
Thanks.

No other changes, I did put some DC Fix diffuser film on the lens, just for kicks, but it came off as I liked it better without… Either way, a XPL replacement if you mess up the LED will be the same (or close) price as an XPL HI…

Not on purpose but it did it by itself when i removed the head the first time. Unfortunately it didn’t work after. Reflowed a XPL HI on it and it was better anyway, then dropped it when hot and deflowed it :frowning:

Was in the process of deciding whether to slice or heat up and remove the dome. I opened up the head and something fell, but I couldn’t find what had fallen. Then I’m looking at the led sideways to see how I would slice it and noticed the dome was gone. It fell clean off the led. Found it in the sink. Color changed to a warmer color and lux measurement doubled. Although I like cool tints, this color is not bad and the brightness is much more intense. Happy camper here.

Now that is a win! Good deal… I have been liking the warmer tints more lately, ordered a 7A3 XP-L HI from Kaidomain a few days back to see how that looks…

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH, been there myself… I have actually been better at reflowing LED’s than I thought I would, but there are times that I get driven crazy trying to get them just right… I have found the Osram Olson 95CRI SSL80 ones that are slightly smaller than the XP-G2 die size are a pain to put onto an XPG2 pad, they do not suck down like the XP’s, but slide to the side with a bit more solder and therefore more surface tension… Then you have to hold it in the “middle” of the pad as best you can while it cools… Real aggravating…

I have been impressed with the XP-L HI more than I thought I would, it seems that I never have to master the dedome and possible killing of a good LED…
