This is what I did.
I set my camera, (Fujifilm F200EXR compact digital camera) in M-mode, and set it to 8seconds exposure.
(It depends on your camera, but unfortunately 8” was max on this camera.
with DSLRs you have much longer exposure. Maybe I will try that out on my DSLR sometime.
if you can set it to a longer shutter speed do it! 8” is barely doable, writing 3 letters. )
Then put it on a tripod or table.
Set the count-down timer on 2sec or 10sec.
Turn on your flashlight, and when the picture starts taking, you just Write the letters in the air, with your flashlight pointing to the camera.
In some pictures you can see some red light, which is just my flashlight shining through my finger!
When you want to have a `break` between the letters, just hold your hand quickly in front of the flashlight.
I used my ITP A3 on low… and in 1 or 2 pics on high.
brighter lights might give too much background information in your pictures.
Learned two thangs today now! Maybe someone will even learn me something bout a flashlight that i didn’t know but if not i can go to bed with a smile on face!

I was thinking about giving it a new try, using different colors as well, using cellophane.
I honestly saw that exact same picture somewhere with a black border and some text underneath, before I did mine. So I thought it was just written with a drawing tool in photoshop or gimp. That exact picture inspired me to do this!!!
so if you aim your flashlight at the camera, it seems like the camera would record the image backwards, at least to me anyway? I’ll give it a try, thanks.
so, you had to write it ‘backwards’, and cover up the light for spaces? That is not easy in my opinion. Maybe I’ll just start by doing an ‘l’ or an ‘o’. Then maybe progress to a ‘XX’ or something. Tee hee hee.
you guys are better than me. I tried it - it was pathetic. Couldn’t write anything. How far away from the lens were you? Were you shining the light directly at the lens, or all over the place? I was using 15 sec on a DSLR.
Don’t shine right at the lens, shine towards, but not at. I use manual focus, and set it in advance at approximately the right distance. Range doesn’t matter much, just try to “fill the frame” best you can. Shutter time is optional, 15 seconds should be fine. Here is one my son and I did with a UV flashlight and some glowsticks a few months ago:
Aloha Patrick! I was about 10-12 feet away from my camera. My dslr was set to shutter priority with a 20-30 second exposure but you can also do it in full manual. ISO was at 100 with an aperture of f8 or f9. I also manually pre-focused on an extra tripod on the spot I would be standing at. Self-timer was set to 10 seconds and then lights off to paint with light.
My first one was upside down of course and it took a few tries to get something decent to post.I hope this helps.Have fun!
very nice - teach me! I’ll have to give it another shot. I was trying using my LASER, thought that would be nice but it didn’t work out that well. I had trouble filling the frame, most of what I did ended up in a small corner of the frame?
