Most people outside this community might not know what a buck/boost driver is. Even here many folks are OK with unregulated drivers, look at the quantities of the TS10 bought.
It’s not a cost thing. If we look at Convoy’s C8+ with SST40, same price for both linear and buck drivers. Only if the buck driver has also some disadvantages (can’t sustain a very low level? lower max brightness than the linear one?) makes sense to talk about different drivers’ technologies. Gaining in light duration should make everyone prefer the most efficient driver. And i don’t think burning excess battery power as heat should be accepted any more.
Especially because if you want good efficiency you need good quality coils and the proper ic and setup. Chinese companies(usually those who make sub 40€/$ lights) use lower quality components to save money. This is why you see so many lights with those powerfull emitters but horrible colour. Same with small components, even resistors and capacitors but the problem is with the ics which are harder to reproduce. So you go from using cheap domestic parts to having to use expensive foreign parts. Also the space requirement is more sometimes beacuse of the coil.
TLDR: Quality parts are expensive and cc drivers need those so its easier to slap a fet driver into something and pwm so horribly that i can literally hear it.
I didn’t go for it with my D4SV2 as I wanted that instant burst of bright light. There was a comparison video done by somebody and there was a substantial difference with an otherwise same spec D4SV2 comparing turbo.
I absolute love what Simon does now with new web site. He offers many different LED and driver options. There is virtually no way to say he does not offer what you like, unless you want a different brand.
