Botched Button Top VTC5D

Hi,

VTC5D

I trusted this person and he did not do a good job. He spot welded nickel on top of the positive end with a solder blob on top. Very sloppy.

Are they Safe?

Cannot tell if the insulator is compromised?

Are they salvageable/ repairable ?

Can you try de-solder the nickel and add a proper button top?

I do not know how to do that. That’s why I had this guy do it. Obviously for the last time.

Its simple with a soldering iron, and perhaps a solder wick or solder sucker which removes the solder. Then maybe you can carefully try to remove the nickel plate, maybe peel it with pliers. Be careful not to damage the battery contact. People have successfully salvaged cells from spotwelded packs such as PC battery by breaking the spot welded connection.

Sounds like an annoying mistake the guy did, if the negative and positive arent shorting, the battery should still be fine to use. They are designed to be spotwelded or soldered to an appliance anyway.

Proper spotwelding results in only a bit of internal damage but is what the cell manufacturers will accept.

None of the cell manufacturers find any type of soldering to a cell to be acceptable though. But creating a top button isn’t too bad IMO if done quickly as the top contact isn’t directly against anything inside the cell.

I’m sure those cells can be salvaged – But those blobs are crap and look close to being a direct short

From top left to bottom right: 1 and 4 are good, 2 and 3 are potential bombs.

If someone already has a spot welder, why would he ever do something like this (strip+solder) instead of spot welding a proper button top? Something like this:

Seems like silly thing to do…

The cells might be fine… or might be damaged, depending on how much he heated them up in the process. I probably would not feel safe using them if someone else (and not i myself in which case i’d know exactly what has been done) did something like this in such sloppy way…

I wouldn’t worry about heating up the positive cap. But heating up the negative could seriously damage the structure inside.

I agree. He didn’t know what he was doing. He worked at electronic shop and I thought he did.

I was told by IMR battery where I bought them and someone else I know who’s an engineer to dispose/ recycle the batteries because they’re not safe. If the insulator gets torn more and the positive end and negative meet it’ll short out the battery.

He told me that all the metal that is covered by wrap or insulator, all of it is negative including on the positive end.

If you take out the insulator, stand up the battery where the positive end is on top, put a quarter on top it’ll short and explode.

Would you be interested? I have eight of them. I could not send you a message or I would have gone that route. I guess cuz I’m new.

No worries. I could tell you’re not interested. No response and last online feature.

It would not have been worth it. $55 for eight cells that were on sale. Would have cost at least another $50 for shipping back and forth and paying someone.

They’re being recycled today

I don’t want to mess with those cells— no telling if they’re damaged or not---- I can put proper Button Tops on new cells — That’s the only way I’d give them to some one else for use
