I just ordered a game camera to place on my property to photograph any trespassers without their knowledge.
After reading a lot of reviews, I purchased the Stealth Cam G42NG as it is supposed to have one of the better IR flashes available. It uses an array of 5mm “black” IR emitters to illuminate night-time photos, so perps won’t even know they are being photographed. I’m looking forward to getting this setup to see if it works. I can mount it higher up in a tree filming the area, and no one will even know it’s there. A set of Lithium Primary AA cells should let it run for six months or longer without being touched.
Wireless web cams abound and might suit your needs if the area is always illuminated. If you need better a dedicated setup is the way to go.
The police here won’t investigate break-in’s anymore; they claim that they don’t have the time given their limited resources. But if you have some “pull” you can still make it happen. One of my biggest customers runs a lot of rental houses and he has “pull” so for the vacant houses in bad neighborhoods we set up trail cams and we wipe all the doorknobs clean inside and out when we leave so that they can get good fingerprints from them. If your prints are on the inside knobs you cannot deny having been inside the house but that’s only circumstantial evidence.
The trail cam showing you kicking the door and later leaving with the copper wires and pipes in is what will get you convicted This guy won’t spend for good cams though so we get about a 50% result unless the thief’s prints are on file with the Cops (which they usually are). And we’ve had 2 cams stolen so far- the smart thieves know to look for them before breaking in but it’s usually stupid druggies doing the dirty work so we catch them with the prints and pics combined.
And then I get to go in and fix the damage which costs a hundred times more than the pipes and wires are worth and is aggravating as heck to me, but it’s part of my job so whatever- it pays my bills!
