Budget light vs Expensive

Hello all, long time lurker and obviously first time poster. I wanted start a thread about peoples thoughts on some of the more popular brand lights (Fenix,Nitecore,Surefire etc) and see what various opinions people have on them in comparison to more budget friendly lights. Do you think a lot of them are overrated, under powered per price point, bad warranty. What makes the budget Chinese light much more appealing.

No snobbery here, just curious as I’m currently dwelling about looking to get into budget light and just wanted to here some views.

Thanks.

I like budget lights because they are mod friendly. Manufacturers don’t take the time to lock up all the threads, which make lights very difficult to open up and mod. I do enjoy pricey lights once in a while (Supbeam K40, Jetbeam RRT-01, etc.) but I’m more comfortable working with budget lights.

Surefire: Extremely pricey, and the only reason why I would buy it is the no-hassle warranty. If you shoot your Surefire light and even it’s barely recognizable, SF will probably replace it. (Nope, see the post below.)

Fenix, Nitecore, Jetbeam, Olight, etc. are the high-grade Chinese light manufacturers and their products are very good indeed.

SupFire (M6), SolarForce are more of the budget flashlights manufacturers, and you can’t beat the price/lumen ratio.

Welcome to BLF!

Possibly if you’re an active duty soldier and it gets shot while on duty or a LEO but I can tell you for a fact they won’t replace a light that’s been shot for Joe Schmoe, I know this from personal exp. they also won’t replace a 2 month old light that gets ran over by a bobcat, again I know this from personal exp.

Surefire’s warranty is more designed to serve the govt/govt employees than civvies…

I have several surefires and I also have a collection of about 2 dozen rare/unusual/old (laser products marked) surefire heads and tail caps, I love the company however the last light I bought of theirs was a C2 (the one that got ran over by a trackhoe) and they wouldn’t help me out at all and I haven’t bought another surefire product since then.

Ouch, that sucks. $300 for a 200 lumen light certainly sounds like a waste of money then. :~

You know that’s the biggest waist of money with them? $13.50-25+ (depending on location) for just a replacement P60 incan bulb.

Hey, that’s why there’s BLF where we know better.

Some expensive lights are worth it. Supbeam k40 and jetbeam rrt-0 for me. Another one was the nitecore ea4. Aa light, lots of cool features in a neat package. I loved how it would flash out battery voltage for you.

Surefire is usless with solarforce around in my opinion.

Since I dont mod lights I say both. I have cheap EDC or smaller lights that I dont mind banging around with. HOWEVER, the majority of my collection is quality lights; armytek, crelant, supbeam, niwalker and then my TITANIUM beauties

Depends what you want to do with them. If you need something that will last you a while and younwill take care of then go with quality. If its something you are going to bang around with thennget something cheaper. There are brands such as convoy that are quality but cheaper so you dont mind smashing them around

You can’t really appreciate the true value of flashlights until you go to both extremes. I like high quality things a lot but I also like a bargain and an easy mod.

Modding is fun, but sometimes my mods end up costing me twice the original price of the light.
I’d say if you’re just getting started, look into the Fenix, Nitecore, Olight brands. Once you think you want something Hot,hot, hot. Try a budget mod.

On BLF you will find a large variety of people. People who are into cheap lights only, and also a good amount of people who are into expensive lights. Many of those who are into expensive lights are still highly value oriented. No matter what lights you are into, I think you can feel at home at BLF. :)

Personally I think the majority of premium lights are overrated, often overpriced, with mediocre performance. Then again, a ton of budget lights are quite crappy if you just buy random lights. This is why it can be important do do your homework before buying, or be prepared to mod. You will find a good amount of people that modify lights on BLF. This is to some extend because lots of the cheap lights come with many flaws and often not so good quality control. Stuff that can be easily fixed if you have basic modding skills. Or just stick to lights with good reviews that are more likely to not have issues with sloppy work, no thermal paste etc...

I think many people that stay around for a long time wished they had bought more expensive lights from the start. I seem to notice several people with higher post counts that have been around for some time say it. I think that is natural for most things though, as many have a tendency to get picky. Im not into budget lights because I cant afford expensive lights. I enjoy them all for what they are no matter price range. When that is said, I do find myself using more money on my average lights now than in the beginning. Many here also enjoy good deals, and hunting for the next great light. There are lots aspects with the hobby. If you join BLF and stay active here, you are probably more likely to spend less on lights, but buy more.

When it comes to single cell, single emitter lights, I personally think most premium lights are a waste and highly overpriced. Look into different Convoy lights as an example. These lights offer tint options that far exceed what you can with pretty much any premium brands while in general having good quality and costing 1/5 of many premium lights that have similar or lower performance.

As for quality. Flashlights are not rocket science. I know of just a few cases where a light with a nanjg105C/Qlite or a driver circuit with that platform have failed. These driver circuits are very popular in many lights and I would consider them to be extremely reliable if they are installed properly. In comparison, Ive heard about a lot of Zebralights, and other premium brands that fail. Ive never heard of an Omten switch that have failed with normal use. Ive heard of lots of switches in premium lights fail, even Surefire. When that is said, when it comes to cheap Chinese lights, you risk bad work/quality control, so maybe a switch is not properly soldered onto the switch board and gets loose. Quality wise, budget lights does not have to be behind if you know what to buy. Yet they can be 10 times easier to fix due to using "mainstream parts" if something should break.

I do enjoy several expensive lights. But in most cases only when there are not as good budget options. In most cases there are good budget options. Or you can get a better valued lights if you buy from a "modder" that does good work.

For many who mod, and replace and upgrade internal parts, the main thing that's different between budget lights and premium lights are quality on anodizing and machining work and threads. For many, its not worth paying 3 times the price just to know those things are top notch. Usually those things does not change the user experience when you are out in the dark and using the light.

Im a modder and I mod all lights so my perspective might be quite different compared to others.

I'll pay the least I can for a light that meets certain requirements. When those requirements are easy and vague, the light I'll purchase might cost very little. When the requirements are many and demanding, the list of lights, or light that I'm left with might cost a whole lot of money. Both are still budget lights in that I'm being as frugal as possible with the requirements I had for each light.

So I’m curious… how bad was the C2 damaged? Were you able to resuscitate it?

I own mostly budget lights, but I do require at least some form of quality.
That’s why I love BLF.
Before BLF I bought mostly <15$ lights from ebay and a lot of them are what I know now total crap.
I even had a light that started to smoke when I turned it on.
Since I know BLF I’ve found several budget lights but with a decent quality.
I’m no modder, so what I buy needs to be decent enough in stock form.

And also one thing to consider.
A budget light for one, could be an expensive light for another, and vice versa.

You can get a DrJones driver to do that for a whole lot less money with as many lumens as your heart desires.

My personal limit is. $30 to $40 per light.
Thank God for group buys and Member sales
( would never have spent the $ for my beloved Niteye Eye10 if not for
member sales)

Ill prolly never have a Sunwayman—they are too pricey.

I liked a lot more than just that. Liked that it was fairly high powered for an aa light, liked the side switch, modes... It was a great light for what I got it off fasttech for.

I’m personally like alot of light, but only brought budget light. (due to $$ limitation) And I can buy alot of it instead one expensive brand.

I had buy few (±5) cheap torch in both local store and online before I got my convoy, I could say you easily get low quality product. They are just bright enough for the job. Convoy really have quality that is well over its value, still look around for other light alike.

Well, quite some expensive light also overrated/under-value and some could even low quality, so we can’t say for sure.

In my opinion, budget vs expensive light, they are relatively equal. Only if you get bad expensive light, your pocket/heart hurts. :_(
Getting the right/good light is more better, based on review, unless you are adventurous :crown:

I’m not super price sensitive tbh, but I find that the sales you find on Nitecore and Olight present better deals than the budget chinese options. The sales on nitecore and olight usually come from more reputable sellers with faster shipping too. I’ve seen p12 go for like $44 on sale from an American retailer, I got the 3800 tm26 for $203 shipped, etc.
