Buyers Guide SBT90.2 Light: NI40 vs XT45 vs X9L

Hey guys,

i want to buy my first SBT 90.2 light, and have no idea which one!

Should be one of: Nightwach NI40, Amutorch XT45 oder Lumintop X9L. I like the compact size of an one-cell-light and rear switch is mandatory.

Which of the three would you choose and why? Are they all the same driver?

Does anyone own two or all of them and is able to do comparable beamshots? How can Lumintop get so much more power of their light, or are the datas just exaggerated?

Cheers, Michael

First there’s the issue of availability. I am not sure what the availability is like on BG at the moment.

If you plan to order via Neal, he messaged yesterday to say the NI40 will be back in stock in 10 days time. AFAIK the X9L is on pre-order at Neals with shipping around 17th July. I already have the NI40 from him and have ordered the X9L. XT45 is in stock last time I looked.

Other considerations:

Size and thermal management:
My guess is that the NI40 is the largest and it’s thermal management may be better than the XT45 if you buy into the theory of fins being an effective means of heat disapation. No doubt that the X9L will struggle with managing the heat compared to the others due to size and mass. IMHO the XL9 could be considered in a different catagory of light due to its size.

Driver:
I’m hoping that one of the more learned members here will be able to point out differences in the drivers but my guess is that all 3 are FET.

NI40 has the most throw but I don’t like the UI. Hard to get into turbo. It can last about 1 min 30s on turbo which is good. Never owned the XT45 but it should have less throw than the NI40. X9L has anduril UI which I really like and you can configure it to go straight to max with a double click. It also has the least throw and thermal mass so turbo might last about 30s.

Here are the throw figures after the small initial output drop.

NI40: 225Kcd 949m (measured)
XT45: 160Kcd 800m (my estimation)
X9L: 115Kcd 678m (my estimation)

Just measured my xt45 with not even full cell at 170 kcd

I guess it’s more than. Everyones measurements are also different…I mean my guess wasn’t too bad. I don’t even have the light  Did you measure right at turn on? I usually wait about 10 seconds.

Measured at 5m, probably after 5 to 10 seconds, since i had to get the luxmeter and put it in the hotspot

Also I noticed that the output didn’t change with a 40T on the NI40 and the FT03S down to about 3.9V (70%?). Only right at turn on was there a difference above 3.9v.
