C8 Need help ID'ing driver to see if it will run 2x 18650's and need extension tube.

Hello all I just joined so please excuse the newbie question!!

Please see msg a few down in this thread with pics of the driver that I need help to see if one or both would be ok to run 2 18650’s on.

I have several LED lights but I want to get an extension tube for my Ultrafire C8 to make it a 2x18650 light. In fact I might want a few for my other c8 copies (they appear the same as the Ultrafire but the head is a little longer and the reflector is just a hair deeper but I think the extension tube would be the same. From what I can gather is that the light will handle the extra cell with out any mods, is that true?

Anyway can someone point me to the correct tube?

Thanks a lot and I look forward to reading and learning in the forums!

John

C8 extension tubes

It depends on the specific driver, even seemingly identical lights from the same source can have different drivers, some of them just use whatever fits in the hole and happens to be around at the time. Two CR123 compatibility (6v) does not guarantee two rechargeable lithium compatibility (8.4v). Some '6v' drivers will pop, some will handle it fine even though they're not advertised as being capable, some are built for a true 2.7v-9v input range.

Post some pictures of the actual driver/drivers and someone here will know what they are and what they're capable of.

Make sure your drivers can handle the voltage.

First 2 pics are of the same board (Generic C8 no name light):

These next 2 pics are of the Ultrafire branded light:

Will those pics help identify if they will handle an extension tube?

Thanks a lot!

Ultrafire just puts a microcontroller there and some resistors to limit the current, now that's cheap.

Bump.

Welcome to BLF!
Neither of those drivers will handle 2x18650. They MAY handle 2xCR123A primary cells.

Thank you for the info and the welcome!

Maybe I will look into modding it then. I am new to working with the flashlights but not new to soldering, etc. I have a few pinball machines  Can you recommend a good what appears to be a 16.9mm driver that would handle the juice?

I have several different lights most of them are XML-T6 but up till now I have been running them stock but I am getting the itch to modify them!

Thanks a lot!

There are not many 17mm buck drivers around.
I found one, but it is only 925mA drive current. http://www.fasttech.com/products/1612/10001268/1105800-36v16v-925ma-constant-current-led-driver-board-for
1.25A from DX: http://dx.com/p/3v-8-4v-5w-cree-5-mode-memory-circuit-board-for-flashlights-16-7mm-6-3mm-26108
2A from DX, too deep for a C8: http://dx.com/p/5-mode-p7-led-driver-circuit-board-for-flashlight-dc-0-8-4-2v-106805
Note that I have not tested any of these.

Thanks, I will check those out!
