I guess I could get the spyderco sharpmaker, but if there’s something less expensive that would be great! Thanks!

For my EDC I ONLY use this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001KN3OWW/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_2
It costs 9 bucks, is quick and efficient, easy to use and makes even serrations sharp within a minute or two. I don’t use anything else for my around the House EDC (mainly used for opening packages haha and gardening) and for my purposes the blade stays very sharp. Looks and feels cheap but it works for me for over half a year so far.
Before I got into freehanding, I used the Sharpmaker at home. ![]()
Now I freehand on whetstones and carry a DMT Dia-Sharp (extra fine, 1200 grit) in my wallet with some paper loaded with stropping compound. ![]()
My gosh, I think I need to learn the basics of knife sharpening, lol.
I am not to good at sharpening, so I use a lansky system. I think It cost me around 30$ online.
Umm… I spent probably $40 on testing out budget or free hand sharpening kits. I found that it’s pretty much a waste of money and that I suck at sharpening. I need angle guides or I will screw up the blade. I have messed up the factory edge on several blades by free handing it.
Anyway, long story short. I finally invested in the sharpmaker several months ago and it was well worth it. Save your money and get it. It sharpens so many things around the house- if you watch the included video it shows you how. It even works for my kukri blade.
I found it was cheaper on Amazon than any place else.
This one is very good. This is a copy of Edge Pro Apex for a fraction of the price.
There is the Lansky Turnbox, but it really only has one setting, 20°, because the other 25° is too shallow for most knives.
I suppose, if you feel like sourcing some round rods and you have some skill with setting up a drill press, you could turn a simple block of wood into a similar system, say two holes at 10°, two at 15°, and two at 20°.
Of course Spyderco’s Sharpmaker also has the triangular stones which allow you to do serrated edges easily.
Yeah, this is what I think I’ll do. If I can get it done for cheaper I will, but its looking unlikely.
My sharpening kit is just a Fallkniven DC3 and a leather strop. I’ve just ordered some micromesh in various grits which will eliminate the stone for all but field sharpening (it’s okay but quite a grit leap between diamond side and stone).
From a budget perspective it’s worth a mention as it has other applications such as removing scratches from glass, and polishing screens.
There’s a sharpening system on eBay that does a very good job.
Take a look at the videos Murry Carter has on youtube. He is why I’ve learn’t to get a knife shaving sharp using sandpaper.
Can someone please tell me or give me a link to the basics of sharpening? I don’t really get what all the different parts are. Do you just need the stones?
That ebay system looks exactly like the one that from buyincoins (I bought this one earlier this year). It’s also cheaper by a few bucks and it looks like it comes with a bag for storage as well.
I typically use a cheap lansky 5 stone… but now you have me interested in these vids.
I use a set of Naniwa whetstones
Naniwa Chosera 1k
Naniwa SS 3k
Naniwa SS 8k
Naniwa SS 12k
Also have a few coticules I use.
Do you have any sharpening equipment already? I ask because even a diafold would be enough to restore a working sharp edge on most knives. You don’t necessarily need a kit. If you are obsessive about sharpening then now is the time to confess!
I’ve been collecting and handling knives & swords for quite some time and I only use the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug to maintain the sharpness of my blades. ![]()
Don’t forget about stropping! ![]()
