I opened my X6 and found the below. Going to put a new neg on as the soldering job is ugly and the insulation is pulled completely back to where the bare wire is touching the board. What concerns me are the marks around the led where the reflector has dug through the protective top layer. The light was working normally before I opened it, so it obviously wasn’t shorting anything out, but is this cause for concern?
The marks are where the ground trace is, so not a problem if it wears down to the copper trace. Only would wear a lot more if you remove/install the reflector a few more times.
The LED- wire could potentially short on the sharp edge of the MCPCB. Can't tell from the pic - there's a shadow where the bare wire is. Potentially a problem, might be ok. The good thing about the X6 is the reflector narrows around the LED, leaving a lot of clearance for the wire solder pads, so you should be safe there, but it's ugly for sure.
The LED doesn't look like it's sitting flat though - maybe a bad reflow, could be poor thermally, maybe not - depends how much solder is making contact, or if I'm seeing this correctly from the pic.
Thanks Tom E. Yeah, going to replace the negative wire, but I just wasn’t sure about the marks from the reflector. Looks like I’m ok there then as long as I don’t open it a bunch of times. The led is sitting flat…somewhat crooked, but still flat. Thanks again.
If you’re worried about continued wear you could put a bit of kapton tape there.
