I used to be an examiner on a board certification for a professional organization. There is software out there that can match original to plagiarized. Since AI is nothing more than a complex program it will have syntax similarities that are common to the programming. We caught out quite a few plagiarisms, even though plagiarism was grounds for failure. People thought they could get away with it, even after the program was described to them.
Universities have also been using the software for years. Given enough of a database, it will be able to isolate AI derived papers.

Perhaps someone will use AI to find a way to create papers that evade whatever algorithms the cheat detection software uses… Students would undoubtedly pay for something like that

Yep, I read that they already offer an AI service for that, but it’s supposedly not very good yet at accurately detecting AI cheating.

I’ve often wondered what the purpose of writing papers is in the first place other than for technical writing or journalism majors. I studied computer science and engineering college, and I only wrote 2 papers in four years.

To qualify this, I’m an avid reader of sci fi and that has given me a great appreciation for gifted writers. It has also made me realize that I will never be a great writer no matter how much time or effort I devote to it.

I just generated some content for a document I’m working on and I have to admit to myself that it’s better than anything I could have written no matter how much time I spent on it.

I got good grades and praise in those classes (and in some other English classes), so I thought I was a gifted writer, but now I realize that I'm no Stephen King.

i don’t know if it qualifies as AI or not, but computers have ruined and taken all the fun out of chess.

It used to be fun to study games of grand masters such as Bobby Fischer, or read their books to get some insight in how they think and the strategy behind moves.

Computer chess is too perfect and boring; tournaments are held online and some are accused of using computers to cheat. What’s the point, there is no fun in that.

I’m seeing a recurring theme where the “list things” question given to chatGPT provides answers that are essentially the same theme re-hashed.

Compare the list the machine spits out to any one of the threads about flashlight usage on here, and the list from the machine is pretty unoriginal.

One of the reasons I really enjoy forums, BLF especially, is the originality and creativity of the user’s.

Edit to add: re-reading the chatGPT answer, it doesn’t actually answer the question what is the best use, just gives a list of uses (which are variations of lighting up the dark)…

The AI is quite limited, after some rather short time you have identified the scheme. The bot gives information commonly found on the net without any depth that would add value, plus doing some censorship. Easy to see where the authors are standing politically. Completely worthless.

If the GDR would still exist, you could easily generate aktuelle kamera texts with it :).

It does seem to generate lists a lot but not always. I just asked it some questions about a medical condition one of my relatives has and it quickly gave me the info I needed, not in list form. Out of curiosity, I web searched the exact phrases in the response and no hits. Perhaps it restructures the sentences and uses some synonym lookup tables.

Using it to generate things to post on BLF (aside from the example I put above) would certainly be a waste of my time and everyone else’s

I think the art generation part is a bit of a grift. I saw a clip where someone fed it prompts to try and have it generate art of the internet personality XQC. The result was XQCish, no doubt, but I immediately recognized the hair. It looked like it was ripped straight off of Elsa from Frozen, probably a fanart. That’s not creativity, that’s throwing a bunch of human-produced art into a blender and spitting out Franksteined art. No wonder artists are getting pissed off.

Wow nice. I was able to write a little powershell script to “converse” with ChatGPT. Some people have found ways to hack it to make it churn out profanity.

c. now i just found out it won;t like ‘burner phone numbers’

d. i have not seen anything yet that looks like you could trust it - you have to do all the verification work yourself anyway

Yeah, I tried using burner numbers and a Google Voice number, but finally relented and used my real phone number.
