To explain it a little better, my first sanded XHP50A worked until I ramped up the current close to 4A, and soon afterwards half the emitter died. I then vigorously sanded another one to a lesser depth, but that one got straight killed. I am referring to rough sanding damage. When pressure is applied to the dome against the sand paper it causes deformation to it, this twists the bond wires beneath. I remember sanding my emitters in circular movements (LoL!). Upon careful post mortem examination I could clearly see the bond wires badly messed up beneath the flattened dome remnants.
