I actually use an honest Huawei Ascend P1 but it feels underpowered and its screen is cracked… Thus I need a larger and more powerful smartphone for work, ideally with as good a camera as possible to snap pics of my newborns as they grow, with larger screen.
I’ve seen LOTS of unknown brands smartphones in the sites I usually browse for Flashlights and gear, NAMELY Fasttech and Banggood, like “cubot” “xiaomi” and other never heard of brands. Does anybody educated on smartphones know if those devices are generally very good bargains or not worth the saving? Any popular models?
Hehe… I found the perfect android phone awhile back. Most people don’t like them and were trying to get rid of it. They were throwing a gem away. Picked up 2 Samsung Galaxy Relay (android) for 150ea brand new right after release, in the boxes. They were giving them out in plans at T-mobile but all the choobs like iphones. Found them on craigslist- there was so many though it was a buyers market. The phone has a nice keyboard and can be unlocked/rooted fairly easy. I dunno, just can’t stand phones with a on screen keyboard. You ssl into your server and the keyboard is so much nicer. Like having a tablet that fits in your pocket.
You can probably still find them for sale somewhere. It’s about as fast as a s3.
The Pomp is quad-band, dual SIM, and has 1.2GHz quad-core CPU with 1GB of RAM.
This was a kind of experiment, as I’d never had an unlocked phone, but we found that it worked with both an AT&T Gophone SIM (in the U.S.) and with an Evergreen SIM (in Korea).
What does a new nexus cost these days, i got mine straight from google, very good price, and if you wait for hte next nexus, the price will go down quite a bit more
I got 10586 which is good, but CPU is evaluated as “poor” in that it doesn’t do a good job at running large apps, plus RAM is quickly filled up. It takes precious seconds to launch camera up, and up to 15s to launch Facebook when it is bogged. I do a lot of multi tasking and run demanding apps, I feel the need for something more comfortable to work and browse with.
Xiaomi makes quite good phones. I’ve been using my Xiaomi Hongmi (Red Rice) 1S for a couple of months without any problem (dual sim, very good display, decent camera, excellent GPS).
Check out the reviews about the Hongmi (Red Rice), the faster Hongmi (Red Rice) 1S or the more expensive M2 or M3 models. You need the WCDMA version in the EU.
Xiaomi
Are the stuff quickly taken up on apple and Samsung I wish I could find the article on Xiaomi.I think it was a Forbes article really pumping up the Xiaomi line and how the company emulates Steve Jobs style .I know I love my Samsung S5 but it isn’t a budget phone.
I would strongly recommend not buying a chinese cell phone, the quality is often garbage, there is a good reason the chinese prefer north american brands for most products. A friend of mine bought a chinese iphone knockoff for $400 (he is an idiot, i know) from a coworker who sold them (probably bought online for $100-150) and after a month it started having serious problems, the screen would not register touch, battery life was poor, phone would ring but could not pick up etc.
We are used to flashlights but they are very simple devices and hard to screw up, yet it still happens, and chinese brands have no standards to meet, and no distributor breathing down their necks, they are made to be cheap and sell for even cheaper.
