I want the color options of an xp-e emitter but the output of an xm-l. I have some special transparent bulb paint that I’ve used the make colored bulbs. What result would I get if I did a light coat on the aspherical lense? How much will it deminish the output of the emitter?
Edit: maybe I have my terminology wrong but the lenses I have in mind are the 20mm “optical” lenses like fasttech sells. Maybe aspherical and optical are two different things.
Green. I’ve read that leds don’t shine well through colored or painted lenses as well as incandescent. I guess I either have to use more xp-e’s in green to get the same output or just live with the tint of xm-l’s. Decisions decisions.
i thought about… red color on incandescent doesn’t just make the light red it rejects “almost” all color but the red wavelength. with white LED’s it’s blue with yellow phosphor. to quote pyro “For instance there is very little red light coming out of a cool white LED.”
I guess I’ll bite the bullet and go with the xm-l’s. My second choice is blue but if it really filters that much light, then I won’t mess with paint. Btw, what tint xm-l’s will give me the most blue tint? It can’t be blue enough!
You can get high power LEDs in red, green, and blue (and other colors).
And beneath the phosphor layer of every white LED is the most freaky bright royal blue LED you have ever seen. BTW, don’t look at them. Your eye is not sensitive to blue and they are a LOT brighter than they look.
to get coloured light out of my flashlight i would always use colour filters instead of painting the lens. Take a swatchbook (it’s for free often) and you get an imagination of the world of beautiful colour-shades.

Thanks. I think ill leave the filters alone looks like I’d lose most of the light output like everyone was saying. I’m going to stick with green leds. I’m just going to have to use more of them to get the desired output.
