Convoy S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8. Is one better than the other, are they basically the same with different exterior designs, do they all use the same reflector? Personally like the looks of the S6.
They all pretty much have the same reflector dimensions except for the S3 which is nearly a pure flooder. The S3 is also the best looking of the "S" series (IMO) but I do wish it had a reflector like the others which are still flooders due to the 20mm diameter but have quite a bit more useful throw than the S3. Outside of that it's all in which looks nicest to you.
I like S4, I build them with custom drivers, and gift them or sell To my mates, never a complaint as yet, oddly enough they seem to like the Glow tail cap
I have multiples of S2, S3, and S4 and like them all. All have their strong points - out for a walk, I like the flood of the S3. For a bit more throw and all around use the S2 is an excellent host. For a ‘hard driven’ light, the S4 offers better cooling, with flood & throw somewhere between the first two - perhaps my favourite by a small margin.
Don’t be afraid - it’s a matter of choosing between good things; I’ve never had a lemon yet. I have shied away from the S7 so far, as I believe the stainless would be not only heavier but offer less cooling ability. It might be prettier, but it has less personal appeal for me.
i have S2 and i love it, it is much better in person than in pictures, and host can be bought for just 8 $ from FT…
I have S2 S3 S5 and briefly S6. The S2 and S3 are my personal favorites. S3 with a warm tint is a great flooder. S2 with an XPG2 and smooth reflector is an amazing thrower for the size. Have no idea why the S2 is cheaper, it’s super nice! The S5 is the smallest, lightest, but not by much.
FYI, the S2 host from RMM is beautiful!!
Turn the S3 into a thrower (well, compared to what it started as): https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/22371
The others all use the same reflector, with two minor differences. The S4 reflector has the same internal dimensions but adds an o-ring at the front face and around the base, to seal off the insides from the open 'cooling slots' in the head. And the S2 comes with the same reflector as in the link, but with the hole bored out to the normal 7mm XML size. The others use the reflector with the step around the emitter hole - the ID is the 5mm XPG size, but the step locates on a normal XML-size centering ring, and the XML dome fits in the hole just fine. Opening the hole isn't needed and doesn't affect the beam for better or worse, so I'm not sure why the S2 ships with the modified part.
Well, i fell in love with 3C-tint M1, and just yesterday ordered 5C S2. I need more pocketable light. Liked the way it looks and it´s nice to see the real-life difference of 3C and 5C.
Ordered the S6 because of the knurling all the way around and no cutout with the Convoy name printed on it, gives a kind of custom light look. Will order more different ones if I like this one. Does anyone have both a Convoy and the Roche F6? Love the F6 and the quality is excellent but the side switch is easy to turn on while caring in a pocket.
Do you have any lights you can compare the S6 to? It looks like a real nice light. Which one did you get?
Got the S6 with the 2800 driver and neutral led. Just ordered a few hours ago so I won’t have it for another month. The reason I decided to try a Convoy S series is because I received a couple of the Roche F6’s a few days ago and they are awesome, not much bigger many AA/14500 lights such as the Sipik SK68 or Ultrafire C3. The Roche is really nice with excellent build quality equal to Jetbeam, Olight, Fenix, and others. The only problem is the side switch is easy to turn on if carrying in a pocket but can be remedied by a 1/8 inch loosening of the head. Figured the rear switch of the Convoy would be better for pocket carry. The other lights I have in this size are either 14500 or 16340 powered, none besides the Roche in this size that run off 18650.
I’ve got the s4 with a t6-4c driven at 2800 running Dr. Jone’s NLITE firmware with no memory.
I really like the aesthetics of the light and other than the clip I have no complaints.
The Roche F12 is another one you could try. I have the Desert Yellow 2800.
I also have the Roche F6, Convoy S2 and L4.
All of these are very well made lights that come in various power outputs and tints. Most also have 2 mode choices.
I agree with Southland that the F12 side switch could be a problem in a pocket however you do need to hold it down for a second or two for it to switch on.
Battery length also needs to be a consideration as they dont all accept long protected cells.
I really like all of mine for different reasons. They look good, the finish is fantastic for a budget light, great output and beam profiles and I have not heard many reports ( except a recent one with the F12 switch on another thread here) of reliability issues.
I’ve owned the S2 and S3 versions for a while. Personally, I like the beam pattern of the S3 reflector more than that of the S2. The S2 has a deeper reflector which results in a smaller, brighter corona which is good but, because of its texture, the hotspot is not defined enough for my tastes and in my opinion, even though the S2 reflector is deeper, the S3 reflector gives a brighter hot spot. WRT heatsinking, the S3 has a thicker heatsink than the S2 for example and in my opinion, can handle higher currents. The S3 is also a little smaller than the S2.
S5 is my favourite design of this range. It’s discreet and modest, feels great in the hand. Not really any form over function I can think of.
