Just ordered a S6 for EDC and was wondering if anyone has used an XPL-HI in one yet. Unsure if I should go with a domed XPL or use the HI for a little more throw out of the small reflector. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I have an XPL HI in my BLF A6, compared to stock, it has a tighter beam. How much more throw? No idea, but for me it is as close to ideal for a non-floody tube light beam as I can imagine…
I tried a XPL HI in a Thorfire TG06, a AA sized tube light as well. It did not have as much relative improvement as the BLF A6 sized reflector did. I went back to a regular XPL in that one.
I think the XPL HI in the 20mm reflector works good enough that it is worth it for the price to get more throw. It will not turn it into a C8, but it is an improvement…
Thanks for the response. I think I am going to try it to see if I like it. I do have an off brand c8 that I can try it in if the s6 is not to my liking. That would then leave my s6 open for a triple
I carried an S2+ with a XP-L and S2+ with an XP-L HI side by side and the trade-off was exactly what I expected — two very useful beam profiles. Which of course didn’t make the choice easier. A triple S6 along side an XP-L HI in a C8 is a great combination. As a new C8 convert, I’d vote for that.
I believe you can find the exact driver and firmware from RMM at Mountain Electronics. Put that driver, an XP-L HI and a Convoy “S series” host (check the “Build and Test” box) in your cart and RMM will build it for you.
It will cost a little bit more than a stock A6, but the Convoy host is reportedly better than the A6 and you will have RMM standing behind the product — which is a good thing. Overall a better A6 than the A6, with your choice of emitter.
I have tried an XP-L HI in a S8 (same reflector as a S6). With a OP reflector, throw was decently improved…but nothing to write home about. However with a SMO relflector…huge improvement. Nice smooth beam profile too with a defined hot spot. FYI I got the SMO from Simon when I ordered the host.
