Agree, it’s definitely going to be worse. But LHP73B can handle twice the power of XHP70, so with XHP70 drivers, it might still be okay even with inferior cooling?
UPD: I’ve re-checked the numbers: looks like XHP70 can handle lots of power as well, but Convoy drivers are 6V 5A (30W) for XHP70 versus 3V 20A (60W) for LHP73B. The idea is to use LHP73B in a light that previously had XHP70, without driver upgrade, but with a special MCPCB to configure the new emitter into 6V mode.
Nothing to worry about, it is not a letdown like sft25r 5000k was for me. If it wasn’t for the yellow spot in sft25r in the past, i probably wouldn’t even notice the slight yellow tinge in sft42r. You will be happy with it.
For the record, you can FET drive a xhp70 with series batteries for some insane output at reasonable drive currents, like 6 volts 18 amps is possible with very robust cooling. The Lumintop PK21 (a prototype-never mass produced which had Anduril 2) direct drove a xhp70.3 HI off 2S and it made 8000+ Lumens (on and was perfectly reliable).
Be aware then that it doesn’t have direct thermal path then. It doesn’t conduct heat away from led as well. It makes the led have a same problem that for example Nichia B35AM leds have.
Tried my best to capture the sft42r 5000k hotspot. Host is s6 with OP reflector, wb at 5000k, iso at 250 and shutter speed at 1/750 s. It is way brighter in person, but you can see the slight yellow tinge in the hotspot with these settings. Hope it helps!
Once i finish today’s shift i will try to take another one. But i would not call it a yellow spot, it is a slight yellow tinge in the hotspot. If it was not a Luminus, who is rather known for some issues in this regard i probably would not notice it.
For sure mate, i already have it in 2 of my flashlights. Great all-rounder, throwy led. At 5a in s6 it is barely getting warm, and is not scorching hot at 10a in m21b when using it at 100% outside. Great sft40 succesor.
I wondered too, and the button seems to flash red close to the end, but there is still some 1.5 h of ~50+ lm reserve left. This, plus the 5-clicks voltage check on demand should do it.
