I’ve always had a soft spot for the little XP-E.
The little emitter that could…throw!
Aw, I was hoping they’d manage to lower the thermal resistance. Still 9C/W. Oh well, it’s still a sweet upgrade. Tighter emission pattern too, 110 degrees.
it's time to update the LED in the E09, E10, E11 then.
i'd buy my 8th copy of the E09 if it came with the new XP-E2 emitter!!
Darn it! I misread it as XR-E2  … ahh well still awesome news! ![]()
XML2 cant be too far off then.
Does Cree’s new package design do away with those little solder pads that are on the topside corners of the original XP and XM-L packages?
Will they be upgrading the red xpe to xpe2 if so that would be super sweet.
Thanks for the info

The little XP-E in my Maratac Cu is great. Having a new gen version would be awesome!
I’m waiting for “XO-L”
Round LED 2500 lumens @ 30W 10sqr mm.
LOL
I'm hoping XR-E2 next
I have no actual clue if an XR-E2 is coming, but I wouldn’t necessarily expect it, the XR-E is 5+ years old and somewhat dying off.
Bose you may know the answer to this question (sorry its a little off topic):
Are old LEDs still in production ( e.g the XR-E ) benefiting from the gains in efficiency being achieved in other LEDs ( e.g XP-G ): e.g the XP-G can do upwards of 100 lm / W (at ~4W ) while a XR-E R2 does something like 70 lm / W (again at 4W).
Surely it makes sense to use the same tech from the XP-G under the dome of the XR-E?
I thought I had all my leds’ in a row now they will drive me nuts with
the latest/greatest releases. Bah, humbug! I think I will just go strictly drop-ins’ & just get e to keep me updated. ![]()

They all do use the same base, just then dived into different sizes for different packages and the packaged, so the base is the same technology, however the package, I.e. phosphors, domes, etc are obviously different and effect the final product, so I dont know that part because that’s not where I work, so I guess my answer is possibly lol.
Cheers Bose
I guess the increased performance seen on a few threads on here regarding pushing the latest XR-Es well above 2A points towards some form of improvement over the original, I guess I wont know until I buy another torch to compare them against: I think a A60 with the latest XR-E I can find driven at around 2.5A should tell me. ![]()
The XP-G2 has a different base (or something over the base). It looks all metal instead of green with corner square (I don’t think those are soldering pads). The XP-E2 is probably similar to the XP-G2.
Its strange that XP-E2 doesnt look anything like XP-E on the outside.

The XP-G2’s larger dome extends to the edge of the base, while XP-G’s dome does not. Do larger domes reduce the apparent die size and surface brightness of the 2nd-gen XP emitters? Cree’s documentation states 20% more flux as well as a tighter beam profiles for the newer generation LEDs…but if the die appears larger through the dome any gains in surface brightness might be cancelled out <———- RAMPANT POSTULATION ON MY PART, probably not even true (and if it is true than so what?)
