so it seems that every few years this gets asked, and idk if it is just evolving tech, or varying opinions, but it seems the answers change.

i have a c8 from mtn elec. it is the xp-L HI version.

i need another thower… one to keep at home and one to travel with me… i figured id get one with even more throw, as i use it for spotting deer(legally, for viewing only), while riding fourwheelers, hiking, etc…

i also saw that the longest throw option is to build(dont have that ability), or buy a build from people on here… im open to that idea too, but idk where to look.

and then i suppose the next thought is… is there a better 18650 thrower than the c8, that is under $50?

very awesome. hmm… now you have me thinking… maybe what i might want it something like that d1s, but with a 2x 18650s? would protected be ok, or would i be limiting myself on the higher modes?

D1S can only accept flat top unprotected batteries. It has very limited space in length for battery.

hmm… that might limit me to the gt mini then… my off grid camp has limited ability to recharge batteries, so for long weekends, it is important that id be able to swap the 18650 in this, which would be more for novelty use, into my headlamps which are needed in more important tasks… one of which is a nightcore hc50 which doesnt take unprotected flat tops

i often use my c8 as a glorified spare battery carrier.

No. The led is maxed out. Two 18650 will blow that led and driver. And no 2x18650 tube or extension for that flashlight.

ohh, sorry, i didnt mean that light specifically… i meant something like it… a thrower with 2 18650s. the only ones im seeing in my price range are the wowtec a4 and the convoy l4… but my google-fu is a bit off today.

Then go for wowtac A4 if size is not a problem. For the price it is a really good thrower.

Nope, a 2*18650 flashlight won’t help you for two reasons:

At some point, you will remove one of the batteries of your flashlight to use it with your headlamp. Where are you going to store the depleted battery? Inside your flashlight. So, from now on, every time you use your flashlight it can blow up… Even worse, if it has an electronic switch (always standby) it can blow up at any moment!

If you are going to use 2*any lithium batteries (connected in series or parallel), they need to be matched. Same brand and model, same purchase date, same charging cycles, same mild/hard use etc. Use only one of them a few times and the pair isn’t matched anymore

In my opinion, buy a small battery holder for a 18650 or two and get whichever flashlight you like. Go wild! Get a Lumintop ODL20C or a Thrunite Cat v6

Yep, i’d recommend the D1s as well. Still don’t have one though, but if TK says it….

The dual 18650 unit wouldn’t be used in this manner and could use any type of paired batteries. The requirement for protected button tops only stands for the single 18650 unit.

I thought doing that was just not great for battery life and efficiency. Aka, one worn cell and one good cell, the worn cell will dtain the good one… Sort of like the slowest buffalo scenerio? Just curious. I’d avoid doing that regardless.

@idiggplants, that only works in parallel, and only with small differences.

In series, it will not make cells explode obviously, but will drain one 18650 faster than the other, and can lead to problems down to the line.

IMO you should just go with an Emisar D1S, and a spare 18650.

IMO, I think you should

Always charge series cells together, with similar capacity and internal resistance.

It’s impossible to be “perfectly” matched but they need to be as close as possible. What we try to avoid is one cell being more worn out, depleting far quicker than the second cell and, at some point, the second cell starts charging the first but with reverse polarity. It’s not for efficiency, it’s for safety. It is possible for a cell to go bang in such a scenario

The SST-20 has 30% more throw/lumen compared to the XP-L HI.

Therefore, at the same power، an SST-20 will throw quite a bit more.
