Curse of the nerd... Do YOU have it??

I do not know if this is the right phrase or if there is even such a phrase in English. In Danish we call it this "Nørdens forbandelse".

What is it:

You discover something new.

You read and read and test and test and think of it all the time and you use your considerable powers to master this.

You master it. Either to perfection or at least well enough that it is perfect for your use. Or lack of use.

You do it a few times over.

Then it holds no more interest to you.

You move on to... other things.

You do it all over with something new.

So. Do you have it. The Curse?

Sure, but I thought this applies to everybody… it’s called being curious. Maybe some more than others.

I have that problem. It’s called short attention span.

I read too much about almost everything, i am known by many nicknames for having extensive knowledge of most subjects. A few exceptions, i know nothing about fashion, only a basic overview of history and no interest of any kind in organized sports

I’ve always suffered from a short attention sp………

I discovered your new post. I read it over and over and thought carefully about a response until I came up with the Perfect Answer.

Then I started writing it and I…

Uh…

^ LOL

Yeah, I have it too but I usually don't reach any level near perfection. I get to some level of semi-competent skill and then move on. Flashlights is my longest hobby interest to date. Probably because it has so many facets. I'm way over due to move on, but I hope I don't. I think my interest will eventually fade, but technology will continue to march on and interest will probably revive periodically.

Yeah I

yup :frowning:

The equipment from my 30 or 40 past hobbies would probably agree. Every once in a while I go and try one out again just to find i am still almost as good as I was when I stopped. I then move on to something else. For me it is the challenge not the final product that I enjoy. I also get to add a notch on my belt of things I can do.

LOL… happened to me every year
new hobby is usually equal more money out of the window

I know what you mean. I could probably be a rich man if it wasn’t for all my hobbies.

Yep, totally. Although being an insomniac flashlights have continued to hold my interest. I like being outside at night, although I don’t always walk with a flashlight at night I do like having one for the fun of it.

On other stuff I buy doing the research is more than half the fun. When I go to buy anything I will research it to death before I buy. Actually that is how I found this place, doing research. Heck I will do a ton of research before I buy a $5 item just because I enjoy knowing everything I can about what I’m buying. Like I said that is more than half the fun. Once something grabs my attention I try my best to learn everything about it and kind of obsess on it for a while.

Wait … gaining knowledge and ability is a curse? Sounds like the dullards in high school who claimed some things weren’t cool because they couldn’t keep up …

thats about the culture right now, the ‘nerds’ are shunned

a wonderful example of social progress

It may just be my interpretation but it's not the learning or new skill that is a curse, it's the loss of intrest or lack of a feeling of lasting fufilment/satisfaction.

Totally agree!

but I'm still trying to figure out my wife

That sums things up for me quite well. Though, I must say flashlight modding has held my interest longer than anticipated. Could be the relatively low cost of entry & somewhat instant gratification when a project light is completed. It’s an awful lot quicker and easier to get competent with flashlights than say… Snow/water skiing (two of my many other, now very neglected, hobbies).

Well Shur has got it nailed as to what part of the conundrum constitutes the curse. Not the gaining of knowledge. But the loss of interest.
