So I discovered the wonderful way to get free 18650 batteries from laptop battery packs salvaged from Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc. Too cool. Did a ton of reading beforehand. I’m like a natural dismantling the packs. Was only mildly scary the first 2 I did but after that, no problem Only got a small spark once, startled me at first hehe
Anyhow, I wanted to find out how you all de-burr the left over tab spot welds. Do you have any pics of ones you’ve done? I do have a little dremel kit but was unsure what to use on the spot welds and I didn’t want to possibly scuff up the tops/bottoms un-necessarily.
just give the metal tab a good snap ( and twist if necessary) in a yanking motion with some kind of pliers. the tab comes off nice and smoothly. no need too grind anything down. done many packs and works great every time. just make sure you leave some metal to grab onto, cuz if you cut it too short you will have to grind it down.
I also pull the tabs off with pliers but the tiny spot weld still leaves a rough surface. I smooth them down with a Dremel, have used different tips and all worked fine.
I use a fine tooth mill bastard file. I re-wrap them when I do it tho so it doesn’t matter that the wrappers get scuffed. I was tired of the little imperfections using a dremel left and I wanted it perfectly flat so I started filing them.
I trim the tabs with diagonal cutters and then smooth the corners and edges of the remaining piece of the tab using a small grinding wheel. The tab remnant helps ensure good contact with the next cell when I use them in series.
