De-domed a LED, went a bit wrong. Have i F***** it?

Ok, my de-doming of an xph70 went a bit wrong. To the point i have managed to remove ALL the silicone ‘bubble’. The led still works but that yellow film has gone and it looks ‘blue’ although it is a 65000k version. Have i just trollied my LED or is it still usable?

It looks to me like you may have just missed the critical part over the phosphor layer by a Gnats man parts

Yes, you now have a large royal blue LED.
That yellow stuff is the phosphorous layer that normally turns the blue light into the other colors of the spectrum so that you get white light.

So that explains that then. One royally led but without making mistakes, you learn sweet FA.
Fortunately, they aren’t too expensive. Oddly though, i was using a brand new scalpel blade and the dome just came away from the led surface taking the phosphor layer with it.
Just saying to a mate, when i worked in Maplins back in the late 80’s / early 90’s we started to sell blue, 5mm, water clear leds. £17.50 each and the first white ones were almost double that.

To be honest, I really don’t think its worth trying to de dome emitters anymore, if you want throw there are lots of good factory dome less emitters around that will outperform an xhp 70 , those leds are best suited to flooder’s

Even a nice hard driven domed Xhp50 will probably out throw a 70

Yeah, i’ve ruined a few LEDs myself too, trying to slice the dome off…

Even very high Color Rendering Index and decent efficiency.

I use very thin washers and stack them until you get the desired height then take a brand new razor and slice slowly one way. I’m sure others have better ways of doing it but this is what I do.

One (improbable, but creative) way to salvage that might be to get a layer of phosphor somewhere else.

Or if you’re daring enough, you might try buying a phosphor, mixing it with silicone and reapply it on your emitter.
