what would be the avantage in dedoming a XML2-u2 in a zoomie?
any ideas?

Same as any other light.. More throw..
is the gasoline methode still the easiest and safest?
I would say so...
ill try it and post results
I have done it just before some weeks with a xpg2 in a edi-t p14, super tight spot and nice tint from a A1bin led.
Could someone tell me the easiest way to take apart the UF SH-98?
Yep, I’ve had a few apart. They’re pretty easy: (a) remove bezel/lens, (b) remove white plastic ring, © unscrew pill from LED side (there are two opposing notches cut out), (d) remove and separate rest of components.
I was actually wondering the same thing except for my SK68. My Sipik has small slots in the retaining ring, but the clone’s retaining ring is a solid piece. Do I make little notches in it and then unscrew it?
I guess we are talking about a sk98 clone(18650 version of the sipik sk68)
Unscrew bezel with lens, unscrew pill through the front.
Sometimes the pill has grooves for pliers/tweezers to unscrew, sometimes you can loosen the pill with clamping the pill to the zooming part with pliers and turn the whole zooming part, sometimes you even can just turn the fully zoomed out front part so that the oring friction unscrews the pill.
Just try it is easy.
I may be totaly wrong, however my understanding is that dedoming results in more light going sideways and less going forward, good for reflectors but a zoomie does not use any light thrown to the side, there is no reflected light, it has to hit the lens to be of use.
You could try it with a cheaper XML and observe the results ![]()
Cheers David
I agree. The spot will be smaller because of the optics change, but less total light will get out of the emitter and it will go more sideways. So you may get less light per unit solid angle as well as a smaller spot. A dimmer as well as smaller spot.
The arguments on sideway spill has been going on for a while. Some say yes, some say no, I wish someone would just go ahead and confirm it with data. ![]()
Not me, I’m swamped with unfinished mods (read: too lazy to do such setup).
But to dedome zoomies, for me it gives much better tint on flood mode, and much better light quality to work with. So that by itself should be enough reason for dedoming.
On the other hand I’m wondering what would happen with TIR lenses of different angles. Would dedoming lead to some improvement besides tint change?
I wouldn’t mind knowing that too.
I tried it with an old 2 D cell Tesco TIR lens torch……it wasn’t good……you could see the die projection as well as a ‘hotspot’ of a sort!!
just done with dedomeing the XML2, after about 30hours of soaking in 2stroke petrol, i had to pull the dome off. it was a little bit harder then expected. i think the petrol did not work that well on the dome. it might have been of the cold (i let it soak outside, max temp was around 15°C). i still have some dome left around the contacts but i don’t wanna mess with it to much, i dont wanna break my only U2. the tint has changed alot more than i thought it would. also im very impressed on how much more throw i got out of it. it also look a tiny bit brighter.
i feel like my first dedoming was a succesfull one. i might post some pics if you want some.
2 stroke petrol isn’t ‘strong’ enough.
I’ve now done numerous dedomes using standard 95ron unleaded.
They’ve ALL been clean dedomes. I do give them a good wash in a 35mm film canister that’s half filled with methylated spirits afterwards though!

You guys get 2stroke fuel premixed? Here we need to mix them ourselves with 2T oil.
Yes fuel mixed with 2T won’t be anything near like raw petrol. They feel much more mild, they don’t evaporate as quickly, they even burn quite mildly in comparison - nowhere near as fierce as raw fuel.
You need to use normal petrol for dedome.
Tried to clean some pieces of dome Off… Fatal for My LED. Will be buying some new XML 2 U2 this week and try dedoming them again using 95 unleaded. If im correct the dome should ‘fall’ Off then? Also going to buy a T08 and mod with a 3A(or more) driver and U2 (maybe dedomed).
